    Introduction

You might ask me why I would write a book on how women can become warrior queens. The answer is fairly simple. The reason I wrote this book is because my heart hurts to see what we are becoming as a society. Chaos, division, and godlessness have become forces to be reckoned with and I see a need to encourage women to become their very best selves—as intended, designed, and destined by God.

Since I was a little girl, I have always been intrigued by the prospect of fighting to overcome evil. What started with playing Cowboys and Indians with my sister in the empty field next to our house, naturally morphed as I grew older into daydreams of castles, knights, kings, and queens. While other girls were playing with Barbies and baby dolls, I had my little growing herd of Breyer horses overseen by a Jane West action figure.

In high school, I discovered Arthurian fantasy in the pages of Sword at Sunset by Rosemary Sutcliff and I was hooked. Today when I read fiction, my first love is still fantasy or even science fiction written from a faith-based worldview. I think one reason is because those pages are typically filled with strong role models unhindered by the constraints that modern society has placed on us.

I also had the privilege of being raised by godly parents. The foundation for what I will present in this book can be found in the pages of the Bible. God has created a divine plan for our families and communities that is beautiful in its structure and operation. Here we can find fulfillment, strength, joy, and inspiration, among many other things. I believe that through constant pressures from the outside, our families have, in many cases, begun to forget this.

Over the years, as modern society has progressed, somewhere along the line our mainstream media began to show only the things that a certain group of people pulling the strings wanted us to see and hear, and in the process, they also began to filter out the things they wanted us to forget. I’m not going to go too far down that particular rabbit hole as others have already gone there quite thoroughly and their information can be found readily online.

But as I look back through history, I can see a lie being told that goes back to the early days of the feminist movement, if not earlier. That lie is that there is no difference between men and women and that both sexes should be treated equally.

Here’s where it gets sticky. I am not against women’s rights. Far from it. What I want to push back against is the thought that the only difference between men and women comes down to biological parts. What is presented to us now as supposed fact is actually an insidious lie that has worked its way into our culture, our societies, and our families.

The role women play in society is a critical one. Traditionally, women have been the glue that holds families together—and strong family units create a strong society. In this book I am not going to go into the reasons why our families are being torn apart other than to recognize that we are, at this moment in time, embroiled in the fight of our lives. We are in the deepest spiritual battle I’ve ever seen and we are facing an enemy who would love nothing more than to destroy the beautiful family structure that God has created.

In this fight, we have seen the role of women attacked and torn down until it can be difficult to see a differentiation between men and women. That said, I recognize there are times when women need to be the heads of their households, teams, or companies. I’m not speaking against that.

But what I hope you come to realize through the pages of this book is that men and women are not the same. Biologically, mentally, emotionally, and intellectually, we are wired differently—and modern neuroscience proves this point. My goal is for women to be able to recognize what those things are that we are wired to do really well. My dream is for women to realize that no matter what role we play in society, we can still be strong leaders without subscribing to the tenets of the feminist movement.

In some segments of our current culture, the idea of a strong woman who can think for herself, play a strong role in society, and still maintain her femininity has become taboo. As our society has in recent years begun to push back against our unseen overlords, I see a need to reestablish this ideal. In doing so, a Joan of Arc character comes to mind and that is where the idea of the warrior queen was born. I would love to see a strong army of women rise up, an army of women who trust in God as their ultimate authority, who recognize the strengths and weaknesses of women, and who step forward to lead their families and teams with authority. Not authority to lord over men—that is the failing of the feminist movement. Men are not to be hated and looked down upon. Rather, in God’s plan, men and women were created to work together as a team in beautiful harmony. And in that plan, there exists much room for women to be strong and courageous.

Our culture has become so divisive and chaotic that we have focused far too much on us vs. them. Men vs. women, Black vs. White, Christian vs. non-Christian, you name it. There are way too many divisions to name here. My goal in this book is to lift us up above all of that chatter and chaos to find within ourselves a better ideal and a higher standard to live up to. And for us to do that, we will need to realize the depth of the battle that we are in, as well as who and what we are fighting for.

This effort will require an army of warrior queens. Will you join me as together we discover our very best selves?

    Much Love,

    Dona Watson

    What is a Warrior Queen?

…pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance, and gentleness. Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of eternal life to which you were called… 1 Timothy 6:11–12

When you think of a warrior queen, what comes to mind? Maybe images of Lynda Carter as Wonder Woman? Or, depending on when you were born, perhaps Princess Leia? Hollywood has given us many examples of strong female movie heroes to inspire us. But for the purposes of this book, I want to challenge us to think much more deeply than the latest blockbuster hit or TV series. Let’s talk about what it means to be a godly woman.

    What is a Godly Woman?

While entire volumes can be—and have been—written on the topic of godliness, I will present a concise summary for our purposes to set the stage for us to further explore how to be a strong, godly woman.

To be a godly woman, we must start with believing that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. As Paul and Silas told the jailer in Thyatira, Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved (Acts 16:31). We must believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God who came to die in our place on the cross, who rose three days later, and is seated at the right hand of God, interceding for us every day.

From there, we can look to the advice Paul wrote in a letter to a young minister, found in 1 Timothy. As Paul is describing how to live a fulfilling Christian life, he writes that godliness with contentment is great gain (1 Timothy 6:6). When we live according to God’s principles and learn to be content with wherever we are in life while still pursuing obedience to God’s laws and callings on our lives, we are able to live in a sweet spot of true peace.

After warning Timothy not to fall into the trap of seeking wealth for the sake of having riches, Paul goes on to explain what he means by admonishing Timothy to pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance, and gentleness. Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of eternal life to which you were called and about which you have made a good confession in the presence of many witnesses (1 Timothy 6:11–12). Let’s break that down a bit further.

Pursue Righteousness—The word righteousness comes from the root words right and wise. Webster defines righteousness as acting in a just, upright manner; doing what is right; virtuous.

Children are born in innocence. Yet, as they grow, they inherently know right from wrong and they have a deep sense of justice. They know when they are being treated well or abused, and they know when they are misbehaving. My point is that God instills in each person a sense of what is right and what is wrong. That takes place in what we call our conscience.

When we seek to do that which we know to be right and wise, we are pursuing righteousness. It’s really that simple.

Pursue Godliness—Charles Spurgeon knew a thing or two about godliness. He wrote:

Godliness is something more than religion. Make God’s glory your object in life; live in his sight; dwell close to him; seek
