This book is dedicated to all the ‘hero’-ines in my life who have made a difference in my world. They have taught me to look beyond myself and reach out with open arms to those in need of rescuing…those in need of a true hero.

    Hero… Me a Woman?

For most of us, the word hero conjures up images of familiar stereotype roles: Superman, Batman, Spiderman, and the like. For me, the word hero was always reserved for the masculine gender …someone who would traverse that tower of death to rescue the damsel in distress. In fact, many of us gals have grown up imagining ourselves as that princess, waiting for Prince Charming to show up and rescue us from one thing or another.

We have also seen the female counterpart or heroine in Wonder-Woman.

She saves the world by day, brings home the ‘bacon‘ and fry’s it up that night. All is right in her world…and all marvel at her supernatural skills. But what about me? How am I to be a hero? Who am I going to rescue? A better question might be: What are my skills…and who wants to be rescued by me?

I am convinced that deep inside the heart of all women, old and young alike, there is a longing, a burning desire not only to be rescued but to rescue. We have been given this passion and many of us have suppressed it because we weren’t sure how to fulfill this pursuit, let alone understand it or accomplish it.

You can be assured that God’s team of heroes didn’t end with the canonization of the scriptures. I believe that God is still on the look-out for heroes, both men and women alike, to be the heroes in their world. In these next chapters we will discover what it takes to be one of God’s heroes, a true hero-ine in our 21st century world. You might not realize it, but someone in your world needs you to be their hero- to save their life. So, let’s up, up, and away, shall we?☺

    Chapter 1

    Misconceptions about Heroes

    SIGN.jpg

So what exactly is a hero… what do they look like…what do they do that makes them so special…and what do they all have in common? Webster’s version of a hero goes something like this: "a mythological or legendary figure often of divine descent endowed with great strength or ability, an illustrious warrior, a man admired for his achievements and noble qualities, one that shows great courage, an object of extreme admiration and devotion." ¹

For many, our perceptions are probably similar and were most likely learned at an early age. Cartoons, movies, and the like portrayed our Superheroes as the average Joe who through some supernatural mystical process changed from the mediocre to the extra-ordinary. Sure we had our occasional Wonder-Woman, but most would agree Hollywood’s version was usually a man. Not many of us, men and women alike, have really associated the idea of a super-hero with that of being a woman.

I believe God’s line up of heroes is not

gender specific and looks a lot different

    than one might expect.

So…what does a Hero/Hero-ine look like? Unlike Hollywood’s portrayal, real heroes are real
