About the Author
To my people, you know who you are.
Anne sat on her bed drawing in her sketchbook she hummed tunelessly to herself. As she sat drawing and humming her special tune, a soft knock at the door brought her out of her own world. Come in,
she said distractedly. The door opened and her mother came partway into the room. Hey ladybug, you too busy to talk?
About what?
Anne asked quietly.
Her mom held out her hand to Anne, Come downstairs so Dad and I can talk to you,
OK?"
Anne’s eyes widened, Am I in trouble?
she smiled slightly, Whatever it is, I didn’t do it!
Her Mom laughed, No, sweetheart you are not in trouble.
Oh, good!
Come on, let’s go downstairs.
Anne hopped off her bed and clasped hands with her mom and they went off downstairs.

Anne looked around the living room and noticed that her sister Deena was not there, Where’s Deena?
She’s at Liz’s house,
her mom said quickly.
Oh.
Her mom still held her hand, Well, Ladybug, your father and I wanted to tell you about something special that will happen in a couple of weeks. Something that only you get to, uh, do.
Anne perked up thinking she was going to get to do something fun that her sister did not get to do. She began to smile a little. Her mind raced through different things like going to the fun park or maybe the zoo.
Her father broke into her fun imaginings, Yeah, uh, the school called right before we went on our camping trip, they wanted to, well your teacher noticed that you were having trouble with some of your schoolwork, and we all agreed that you should get tested.
Anne’s smile faded and she slouched a little as she realized she was definitely NOT going to be having any fun. She started to cry. It was not fair! But...
Listen, honey,
her mom said in her soothing mom voice. These are not tests you get graded on, they are more like word games and picture puzzles, things like that.
Her mom tried to put a happy face, an encouraging
