I was awoken by the sound of birds outside the windows. The sunlight was so strong that the lady opened her eyes slowly to adjust to the light. I blinked my eyes twice, and my focus started to work. I saw a decent man in his mid-40s smiling at me.
Amber, you're awake. You finally woke up. Do you know you've been in a coma for 12 years?
The man said.
He reached out to touch her arm, but she moved her body to avoid his touch instinctively.
Amber, I’m so glad to see you awake. We haven’t seen you for 12 years. Do you know how excited we are?
An old man said with an excited face.
Yes, Amber, Mama missed you a lot. I can’t describe how wonderful this moment is.
An old lady said.
So, in this room, besides the decent man, there's a mid-70s old couple who seem to be my parents.
My brain is basically empty. I know nothing, have no memories. To me, it feels like this is my first day in this Strange World.
I'm still trying to clear my mind, digesting, and analyzing their actions and conversation.
Amber, you don’t remember us?
The old man asked nervously.
I looked at him and was still processing what was happening, so I didn’t give him any response.
Let me ask the doctor to come. She just woke up. She might need some time. Let’s give her some space and wait for the doctor to check.
The decent man said calmly.
What?? You said she would remember us. Why is it like that?
The old man asked nervously.
Shh... no...
The decent man whispered and gave the old man a signal not to talk.
Amber, you take some rest first. We will leave you some space and ask the doctor to come. Don’t be afraid. You’ll be alright. We are all here for you. Speak soon.
The decent man and the old couple left the room after the decent man said that to me softly.
I looked around the room. It seemed like a private ward of a hospital. The room looked grand. There was also a vase of beautiful sunflowers placed on the bedside table. I'm wearing patient pyjamas. Everything looks clean, tidy, and high class.
Knock, knock. May I come in?
A man’s voice came from outside the ward. I didn’t answer, and then a doctor came.
I heard him calling me Amber. Everyone called me Amber, so probably I’m Amber. He used his green light torch to check my eyes and other equipment to examine me. I still feel empty. It’s hard to describe using any other word than empty
. I don’t know how long the doctor has been checking on me, but somehow, I started speaking for the very first time.
Who am I? Why am I here? What happened to me?
The doctor smiled and said, "Great, you finally speak. You are Amber Johnson. The guy you saw before was your husband, Billy Johnson, and your parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bailey. You have been in a coma for 12 years, but I don’t
