    A Boy and His Fish

The Boy Pressed his face against the glass of the fish tank, he had always wanted a pet, his parents had said no to even the simplest of pets; a goldfish. He sat and watched as they swam around the tank in the store. Watched the light shine in golden iridescence off their scales. How much? he asked the retailer as he passed.

Sorry, they’re all sold, but we'll be getting more in a month or so.

    The boy sighed.

Dejected he left the pet shop and began his walk home along the sidewalk. He paused when he reached the corner that would lead him to his house. He didn't want to go home, so he went the other direction, a way he had only been once or twice.

And that's when he saw it.

He walked toward it as if under a trance, looking to see if he could spot the tell tale flash of gold.

It didn't strike his mind that he might be trespassing as he parted the reeds and peered into the depths of the pond.

Yes, there were fish in the pond, and he formed a plan as he stood there staring at the mesmerizing colours of the fish in the midmorning sun.

Surely they would not notice if only one went missing.

He glanced toward the house briefly. Seeing no signs of life, took off his shoes and socks and rolled his pant cuffs.

    He would have his fish!
