    Indigo - R.M Demeester

Isat leaned against the wall of the abandoned grocery store in the poor end of town, smoking a cigarette and watching the sunset. The local police had raided Leper Paradise, the little homeless district down by the river, and left Bobby, Sarah, the group, and myself scattering for somewhere else to live. We had little time to escape and were forced to leave behind what few possessions we had. All I had left was my stained black and white plaid, long-sleeve shirt, tattered jeans, and this one fag. I closed my eyes and inhaled a puff of smoke.

An explosion of thoughts entered my mind. Sarah, I feared, would skip town in search of a home somewhere else. When she first arrived in town, I had just gotten kicked out of the shelter because I didn't like all their damn rules. So, fate brought us together, but from the moment we met, I knew she longed for something more. Knowing Bobby, he'd climb up a tree for a place to sleep.

When we met Bobby, we took refuge down by the river in an isolated area across the bank from the rich folks in their fancy mansions. The police took away our sanctuary because some bored housewives had too much time on their hands.

Flashing red and blue lights lit up the immediate area, breaking me from my thought. I extinguished my cigarette, stuffed it in my bra, and sat up straight. "Act natural and deny everything." The police cruiser stopped short of where I was sitting. It wasn't enough that the people in those mansions left me with nothing—someone also had to call the police. Why couldn't those nosy bitches mind their own business?

A short, fat police officer with tiny, oval eyes set too closely together on his round face exited the cruiser.

    Good evening, miss.

    I stood. Good evening.

We got complaints about a suspicious person hanging around here.
