    Indigo - R.M. Demeester

    An abandoned grocery store...

I LEANED AGAINST THE wall of the abandoned grocery store in the poor end of town, smoking a cigarette and watching the sunset. The local police had raided Leper Paradise, the little homeless district down by the river, and left Bobby, Sarah, the group, and myself scattering for somewhere else to live. We had little time to escape and were forced to leave behind what few possessions we had. All I had left was my stained black and white plaid, long-sleeve shirt, tattered jeans, and this one fag. The police cruiser stopped short of where I was sitting. It wasn't enough that the people in those mansions left me with nothing—someone also had to call the police. Why couldn't those nosy bitches mind their own business?

A short, fat police officer with tiny, oval eyes set too closely together on his round face exited the cruiser.

    Good evening, miss.

    I stood. Good evening.

We got complaints about a suspicious person hanging around here.

I shrugged. I just got here.

    "So why are
