Impromptu Soul - Jennifer M. Coleman

    Dedication

I dedicate this book to the greatest love ever known, my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Thank you for using me to deliver Your messages of encouragement within these pages to the world.

To my husband and best friend, Bert. Thank you for being my biggest supporter through everything, and never letting me give up on publishing this book. My life is so much better with you in it. I love you.

To my three heartbeats, Ava, Blair, and Nyah. I am so grateful God chose me to be your mom. I pray this book encourages you to pursue hearing from God and that you follow Him with all your heart.

    Preface

What does God sound like? I don’t know about you, but that is a question that I have pondered for many years of my life. I know I’m not alone because I frequently hear believers and non-believers alike ask the infamous question, Does God still speak to us today?

Admittedly, reading the Bible can create a bit of a jealous streak as we observe God speak to and through others. We see this many times, whether it is His booming voice in Genesis speaking to Adam and Eve after their first sin, Moses hearing God from a burning bush, or reading the Gospels and observing the disciples having the privilege of spending their days with Jesus as He taught and instructed them on the ways of the kingdom.

I begged myself this question when reading Hebrews 13:8 NIV, which states, Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever, which consequently means that He still can speak to us by any means necessary. I decided to embark on a journey to take Him up at His word and prayed that He would begin speaking to me in the way He knew I would best understand. Interestingly enough, peculiar experiences began to happen.

In my season of writing, God began revealing to me how small, overlooked items or every day sayings magnified His Word. I found myself so intrigued by the revelation I received in those moments, leaving me with helpful points to ponder. What was interesting lay in the way the messages resonated in my spirit, almost as if in the form of mini-impromptu sermons, hence the title of this book. I began feeling closer to God than I ever had before.

Colossians 1:16 states, For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities, all things have been created through him and for him. The truth of this verse rang out repeatedly as I began to see how everything in creation testifies to the reality of the living Word of God, absolutely everything! It was liberating for me to see the manifestation of scripture revealed through creation. It was then that I realized that the voice I had sought for so long permeated every facet of my day if I paid attention to it.

While writing this devotional, I consulted God about how long it should be. It was consistently laid on my heart that it should be 50 days. Since I was already on a roll with hearing His voice in the unexpected, I figured it wise to see the biblical significance of the number 50. In my research, I found that the number 50 in Hebrew stands for a jubilee, freedom, or deliverance from a cycle. Ironically, this spoke to my heart. In writing this book, I felt released from a process of feeling imprisoned in false thinking that God didn’t want to speak to me in the way He did for others.

It is my hope for you too, that in reading these devotionals over the next 50 days you find the same freedom in learning to know His voice for yourself in nonconventional ways, as it surrounds you in all things observed by our senses in our ordinary experiences and conversations.

    Aerosol Can

Ephesians 2:10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.

Have you ever looked at the label on a can that came with a warning? Especially aerosol cans. For some reason, there is always a severe warning about things that could happen, should you subject the can to certain conditions. Maybe you’ve seen Warning: contents under pressure, could explode if exposed to heat. It is an indicator that before going forward and opening the top, something inside calls you to handle it with care.

Such is the same with us. God has imparted unique things inside of each one of us. Our contents look pretty different and should be given special attention. Maybe somebody would label your contents things like Courageous, introverted, soft- spoken, creative, analytical, or humorous. As simple as some of these characteristics sound, they could be an essential part of what God contained in you to push forth the purpose that He had in mind for you in this world.

We often find ourselves in a space where we are discontented with our lives. Many of those times are when we lose sight of what we bring to the table every day, with simply what’s on the inside of us. Contentment isn’t only found in the things that we can see, but in Christ and embracing all the things that He has made us to be and put on the inside of us.

    Prayer:

Lord, thank You for making me unique. I know that You don’t waste anything and that includes how You made me look on the outside and the inside. Grant me the ability to be content with the things that I don’t particularly care for, knowing that all things You designed me with can serve a purpose for others or a reminder of my need for You in all space and time. In Jesus’ name, amen.

    Traffic Jam

Romans 8:28And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.

What is more frustrating than getting up in the morning, seemingly getting out of the house earlier than usual, and running into a traffic jam? We have all been there or will experience this at one time or another. Most times, unfortunately, it is due to an accident that has occurred. If you notice, most of the traffic is pushed back due to everyone slowing down to gaze at what happened.

Has your life ever looked similar to a wreck? I mean when nothing is going right. It’s when your plans
