    CHAPTER ONE

    YE OLDE PET SHOPPE

    Trina looked at her watch. 3:30, Toby she said to her twin. Time to go home. We don‘t want to be late for our birthday party!

    Trina and Toby left the park and hurried north on Spelling Street.

    Whoa! Where’d that come from? Toby exclaimed. It wasn’t there before.

    He pointed across the street to a purple shop with an orange striped awning. Painted on the shop window were gold letters. They said:

    Ye Olde Pet Shoppe

    Toby ran to the corner and crossed the street.

    Toby, come back! Trina called.

    Hey, Trina! Come see this! Toby was looking at something on the shop door.

    Trina groaned and crossed the street. What is it? she asked.

    This. Toby pointed to a sign on the door.  It said:

    HELP WANTED

    no one over or under eight-years-old today need apply (twins preferred)

    We’re twins and we’re eight-years-old exactly today. Toby pointed out. Do you think the sign means us?

    I don‘t know, said Trina.

    Let’s check it out, said Toby.

    Well . . .okay, Trina agreed. But only for a minute.

    Toby opened the front door. A bell jingled.
