The Magic Pet Shoppe - Grian McFadden

    CHAPTER ONE

    EMERGENCY

Trina pulled a bag of cookies out of her lunchbox. She handed one to her twin brother, Toby, as the two of them turned onto Spelling Street. Here, she said. I figured we’d better eat something before we get to the pet shop.

Good idea, said Toby. I was starving by the time we got home yesterday. Saving magic animals sure is hard work. He took a big bite. M-m-m. Chocolate chip. My favorite. Boy, I wish I’d saved some of my lunch milk.

Me, too. Hey, look, Professor Nilrem’s out in front of the shop, Trina said, pointing up the street.

A short, owlish looking man with a round face, horn rimmed glasses and tufty hair was waving at them. He stood in front of a purple shop with an orange striped awning. Painted in gold on the shop window were the words:

    Ye Olde Pet Shoppe

Good, good! You’re here, the Professor said as the twins raced up the sidewalk to him. "We really must rescue that firebird right away. She’s not in good shape. Not in good shape at all."

What’s wrong with her? Toby asked.

Ah, ah. Koschei has caged her. Firebirds can’t live in cages. Their light goes out. She‘s barely glowing now. Once her light is gone, no power in all the Realms can revive her.

    Who’s Coz…shy? Asked Toby
