The Keeper's First Book - Erik Kristofer Lucero
I am a Keeper; one whose extra sense of magick allows me to use it for anything. What is magick? It is the power of nature. Flowing throughout the universe, it allows us to be.
I am a Keeper. I work with my ability to help all of mankind. I study the many ways to use magick to gain the knowledge to work with it properly.
Tamar, second assistant to Julius Atwater, Head Professor of Fire Magick at Falute Academy. To say its exciting would be nice, but in truth it is very boring. In fact life inside the academy is very dull.
There is little to do other than lessons or studying. If you want any fun, go into the city, but then it can still seem dull compared to the stories about famous Keepers who have had adventures. Oh would I love to see the world.
Tamar looked at the page before closing his journal. Back to world of reality
he sighed. He pushed away from his desk slowly then got up to put his red ropes on over his brown tunic and black trousers. He settled his satchel on his shoulder as he left his dorm room to head toward Professor Atwater’s office.
Hey Tamar!
called a voice from behind him. Tamar turned around and saw Katina. He stopped to wait for her. Doing anything tonight?
Tamar sighed Yeah. I am going to sit in my room and stare at the ceiling.
He said sarcastically. Katina laughed at him.
Angus, Tuvar, Jenki, Erick, and I are going out to that new pub just outside the academy gates. Why don’t you join us?
He thought for a moment. As long as Prof Atwater doesn’t pile on the work I’ll come.
Good, I hoped you would.
She smiled before running back the other way. He smiled as he continued on.
He met Katina before the academy. They first bumped into each other on the streets of the city about ten years before entering the academy. At first they were like best friends. After a few years they formed a more sibling relationship. Always together running through the city causing mischief.
For as long as he could remember they were always getting into trouble one way or another. They were out late one night when Tamar first discovered he was a Keeper. Shortly after entering the academy, Katina showed up excited that she was a Keeper as well.
They spent the next few years studying together. With all the time they spent together everyone thought they were dating. Though for most of the time they only thought of each other like siblings. To Tamar she was as close to a sister as he ever had, and he was like a brother for her. Every day they spent together the more he realized how much he loved her, something he did not think about until they were both in the academy. He was thinking about the past so much he did not realize he bumped into Professor Atwater.
Looking up, Sorry Professor.
It’s ok. You can go back to your room. Classes have been canceled so I will not need your help.
He looked a bit flustered.
Yes Sir. May I ask why?
A council emergency, which is all that can be said.
He left quickly before Tamar could ask any questions.
Chapter Two
I wonder what the council meeting is about.
Erick said.
Probably because they can’t decide who will be the next leader.
Jenki commented.
Nope not that time yet. They are probably arguing about the new lessons.
Tuvar said.
Whatever it is at least there is no work for me to grade. Professor Nave is the worst to work for.
Katina said before taking a drink.
I would love to know what is going on.
said Jenki.
Me too.
replied Erick. It was then that Tamar grinned at Katina.
She stared at him then whispered Do you know how to find out?
He only nodded.
Getting up he looked at the group.
I’m have to go. I need to finish my paper for Professor Granda.
They waved as he left. He was a few feet away from the pub when he heard Katina coming up behind him.
So what’s the plan?
she asked with a grin.
I told you I have to work on my paper.
She gave him her look that meant that she knew it was a lie.
And you really think I believe that.
He shook his head. Yes.
He grinned. Ok, you can come.
He stopped and looked around Last week when you were sick I went exploring at the academy ruins. I found a tunnel that leads right under the councils chambers.
Her eyes went wide. We can use that to hear everything. Let’s go.
They turn towards the academy and walked.
They went to his dorm room before going to the ruins.
Why did you get your bag and snapera for?
You’ll see.
They quickly came up to the ruins. Two Keepers dressed in gray tunics and black trousers blocked the walkway down to the ruins stopping in front of Tamar and Katina.
Halt. What’s your business here?
I’m doing a report on the ruins for Professor Atwater. He’s been wanting pictures and description of some of the areas for the records.
He held up a note.
One of the guards took the note and broke the seal. It’s the truth. This note gives him access for two hours of research. Ok but just be careful. There have been a few collapses in the past couple of days.
They stepped out of the way.
We will.
Taking the note back Tamar and Katina walked down to the ruins.
Is that true about the Professor?
Yes. But I’ve had this letter for about a week. I just did not want to do it. Looks like I was smart to wait.
Yes.
She held up the snapera and began taking snaps. This way we have a couple at the entrance.
Tamar pulled out a note scroll and began writing. Tamar led them to a collapsed hallway then turned down a staircase.
We will just need to walk down the stairs and go about fifty paces. There is a room to the left that has a hidden spot under the council chambers.
They walked until they came to the room. Slowly they entered the room moving to the side that had collapsed during the week.
Be careful. This must have been one of the areas that happens to be weak.
As they got closer to the collapsed area they heard loud voices.
This has not happened in over a thousand years.
Yes, but we still should have been prepared.
That should not matter. This can change people’s minds about us.
Gentleman, what has happened cannot be changed. All that can be done is to prepare for what is coming.
Tamar and Katina looked at each other.
We first need to question the student. It’s important to understand how she obtained the information and where she got the stone. Next we will decide what we need to do.
We should just lock her up. She won’t be a danger to us. Then we don’t have to worry about anything.
Let us first question her before we make any discussions. Now if there is no new business this emergency meeting is adjourned.
They heard scuffling and several voices talking all at once.
"I wonder what happened.
So do I. Here let’s get moving; it’s getting close to the time
They made their way back to the entrance of the ruins.
