    Chapter 1 - Background

    The Backdrop

At 43 years of age, I was diagnosed with unstable angina due to 70 % Stenosis (obstructions) of my coronary arteries. I was treated with an angioplasty and 3 stents. Within two years, I was in difficulties again with the unstable angina and was treated with a further angioplasty with two stents. This story is about my challenges and blessings, and I share insights with the hope that this story can help you in some way to prevent, manage, resolve and thrive in the context of coronary heart disease. I am 66 years old now, and was born in 1957.  I have been living in the United Kingdom since 1974. I graduated as a dental surgeon in 1980 and worked in the National Health Service. I retired a few years back in 2015.

It was a combination of being a single parent (although Sonal was already seventeen years old by then) and working long hours, with a pretty messed up personal life and stressful working life as an owner of busy dental practices. I had previous separations from my wife and daughters, and I had come to terms by making extra efforts to see my daughters more often and keep in touch to stay informed about their lives. Now, to see the two sisters living apart from each other was just not possible to come to terms with. This traumatised me immensely. Being the sole source of income in a growing family, I had never
