      Chapter 1

      I swore it wouldn’t happen to me again. Another Valentine’s Day without a date or a boyfriend?

      What was wrong with me?

      Although looking at the steps leading to my first class of the day, I got my answer.

      A heavy, longing sigh left me. For minutes or hours, I stared at Kendrick Morrison, my brother’s best friend. And also my friend. He had two years on me and kept me frozen in the friend zone.

      Once, I tried getting free of that cold, ugly place. I failed miserably.

      Kindly, he made it clear that he didn’t like me that way. It stung, but I was in no way ready to lose my friend over my unreciprocated feelings. So I sucked it up and moved on.

      Who was I kidding?

      I never moved on from loving my brother’s best friend.

      If only it were that easy…

      Also, my best friend continued to tell me about her dates today. I bit the inside of my cheek. I wanted to tell her that blind dates weren’t a good idea. I tried it once, which sucked because my brother found out.

      He and Kendrick scared the poor guy away.

      They did it with anyone who got too close to me, saying guys were unreliable.

      My best friend got the same treatment, the poor girl. She got no dates for being with me. I didn’t see both guys changing any time soon. But if she wanted to try her luck today, I supported her.

      My eyes traveled to where Kendrick stood. He laughed at something his friend said. His navy blue eyes shone. I kept telling him he needed to let loose more often. He said that was where I came in.
