    ~ONE~

Brandon’s large, nervous hands fumble with the box before it finally opens to the splendor of an elegant engagement ring.

My heart falls. I knew it would happen eventually, but this just seals the door.

Do you think she’ll like it, Taylor? His voice holds anxiety, hope, and excitement.

She’ll love it. I try to keep the disappointment from my voice, giving him a smile instead.

Since the moment I met Brandon I had been in love with him. We met at our high school drama club my freshman year, his junior. At six feet Brandon did not fit the normal actor type, though his personality filled every broad part of him. He welcomed me to the club with a warm bear hug and instantly became my idol. As our friendship deepened, my love only grew.

That hope disintegrated when he met my older sister.

Audrey and I were opposites. My mother and she would spend hours doing their nails, talking make-up secrets, and trying out different hairstyles. I found my place with my father. We would either watch the latest game, whatever the season happened to be, or shoot some hoops in our driveway.

Every time my drama club met to practice lines I did my best to keep it away from my house, knowing the guys would drool over Audrey. The group didn’t let it go, though. My mom lived their dream. She actually made a career out of acting. Not that she was all that famous, but she made plenty of money with commercials and small parts in television shows. Everyone wanted to meet her. My dad also was a hot topic with the guys since he wrote for the sports section in the LA Times.

Finally I gave in and allowed a rehearsal at my house. When my sister learned my drama club was coming over she ran upstairs to ready herself for company. My pleas for her to steer clear fell on deaf ears.

My five drama friends and I visited with my mom in the living when Audrey made her appearance. The three guys’ eyes went wide, including Brandon’s.

Her long, thin legs rolled out forever under her mini skirt. She wore a tight sweater that showed off her mature breasts which put my flat chest to shame. Makeup lined her eyes causing the blue to seem almost the color of twilight, and her blonde hair hung in soft, silky curls. Audrey immediately found Brandon, looking him up and down like a specimen to devour.

I rolled my eyes and ushered my friends quickly to my room.

As soon as the door closed, the guys peered at me with amazement.

She could be your twin! one of them commented.

Yeah, if I wanted to spend over an hour dolling myself up. Not for the first time, I looked down at my baggy Clippers sweatshirt, jeans, and tennis shoes, feeling unkempt as my sister called me. Though we had the same features and did look close to twins, I knew she far passed me in the hot category.

    I quickly changed the subject.

Brandon ended up staying over for dinner. My heart hammered in anticipation, thinking he might finally see me as more. My hopes all collapsed when I walked him out to his car. Instead of kissing me, he asked if I thought my sister would be open to going on a date with him.

    I should have known.

I hid my pain by pushing Brandon into his car and telling him to go take a cold shower. I didn’t talk to my
