About this ebook

The main characters, Shaylene and Matthew, are normal kids who met, fell in love, and answered the call to the mission field in Cuba.

Their love story is fraught with separation due to war, memory loss (amnesia), and unusual circumstances. God was obviously training them for their sojourn on the mission field.

Once on the field in Cuba, they come up against many strange people, including witch doctors, who are out to destroy them and their ministry using incantations and witchcraft and all sorts of devious ploys.

They also encounter storms that ruin their living quarters and allow them to see the love and care of the natives to whom they've been ministering. They experience the death of family members and the unexplainable antics of a mysterious white dog.

This story is based on actual experiences that have occurred and are still happening because God is a God of miracles, and He shows up wherever people know and love Him--and believe--not just one time but Forever and a Day.

    About the Author

In an upper-middle-class, three-story-old stone home in rural Virginia lived a doctor, his wife, and their only child, Shaylene Rene. Shaylene was often lonely, so they hired a nanny to look after her and keep her company. They also hired a woman to clean the house for them. Shaylene really liked the cleaning lady and followed her around.

One day, sitting on the back porch steps was a boy, a little older than Shaylene. She was captivated by him, but being shy, she watched him from a distance. Finally, she decided to get acquainted with him and find out who he was. She came closer to him and smiled.

Hi, I'm Shaylene Rene. Who are you?

As he looked her way, she noticed his beautiful blue-gray eyes and jet-black, curly hair.

My name's Matthew, but my friends call me Matt. My name's in the Bible.

Do you live around here, Matt? Shaylene asked.

    Nope, he replied

Then why are you on my back porch?

I come with my mother. She cleans your big house.

    Oh, I see, Shaylene said.

Matthew looked her over very carefully, noticing her reddish-blonde curls, and remarked, You have pretty hair.

    Thanks. I like yours too.

    Thus, their friendship began.

It was approaching September and time for school to start. Shaylene was a little apprehensive, so Matt came over every morning and walked her to school. He walked her home from school, too, and they spent many hours together. The mother of one of Shaylene's classmates asked her why her mother allowed her to play with a mulatto.

    I don't! Shaylene remarked.

The woman went off in a huff. Matthew was absent that day, so Shaylene ran home by herself. Her nanny was straightening up Shaylene's room, so Shay asked her what a mulatto was. The nanny replied, You'd better ask your mother, Shaylene.

Mother, where are you? Shay called. Her mother answered her and came into Shaylene's room.

    Mother, what's a mulatto?

Why, Shaylene, wherever have you heard that word?

At school, Shaylene replied. Mrs. Clinton asked me why you let me associate with one.

Shaylene, honey, come sit on Mommy's lap You know our cleaning lady?

    Shaylene nodded.

    Well, Matthew's her son.

    I know, Mommy, but what's a mulatto?

It means he's the son of half-Black and half-White parents.

But, Mommy, his mother's White, isn't she?

Yes, dear, but his father's a Negro.

Shaylene heaved a sigh of relief. "Is that all? You've told me that we're all God's children, right? So it doesn't matter what color we are. His skin is so beautiful, like
