Chapter 1
Okay, class, just because it’s the last day of school doesn’t mean that you can just stare at the clock all day. There’s still work to do.
But, Ms. Kawoski! It’s soooo closseeee!
several of the students answered back which started a round of giggling.
Tanya Kawoski had been teaching fourth grade for three years. As much as she loved her job and students, and relished in the growth and accomplishments they made throughout the year, she was always glad to see summer come along.
The students weren’t the only ones day-dreaming about the start of summer. Tanya spent the last hour of class staring out the window at the rays of sun shining through the bright green tree leaves that swayed as gusts of summer wind wafted through them.
This year, she was more excited than ever at the start of summer vacation because she and her boyfriend, Michel, were finally going to go away together. They had been dating for two years and had yet to have even so much as a weekend getaway.
Michel Casey was an up and coming Assistant District Attorney and his job kept him very busy. He took it very seriously and was determined to get promoted to the top before he turned thirty-five. To reach that goal, he sacrificed most weekends and nights in the name of his career. He had graduated law school a year early and passed his bar on the first try with ease. His whole world was about his career path, with one exception, Tanya.
Tanya and Michel had met through her brother, James, who was a police Sergeant. Sis, I’m going to be at the courthouse today, so you’ll need to meet me there for lunch.
Tanya was used to voicemails like that from her brother. She rarely got to have lunch with him, but every summer they made plans to meet once a week for lunch.
After going through security, and rounding the corner of the marble-lined halls, Tanya found her brother leaving the courtroom with Michel. Tanya and Michel’s eyes met and were glued to one another as her brother made the introductions. She was careful to note the absence of a wedding ring as she shook his hand.
Never being the shy type, she called Michel’s office the next afternoon to ask him out.
I’m not used to having women call to ask me out,
Michel replied into the phone, without really giving an answer. He was a bit stunned, but more than that he was amused.
When I see something I want, I go for it,
Tanya answered confidently. Her brother hated that confidence in her. From the time she became interested in boys, he felt nothing but stress. He knew his sister could handle herself, but still...he was her big brother. It was his job to intimidate any boys she went out with and make sure they were kept in line.
Michel wondered if the woman on the other end of the phone was really as confident as she seemed, or if maybe it was all just an act. He was curious enough to find out, though, so he agreed to go out for dinner with her that weekend.
During his dinner with Tanya, he quickly realized her confidence was not an act. She wasn’t meek or shy like so many of the other women he had dated throughout the years. They had all just seemed impressed with his schooling, degree, or jobs and seemed to say things that they probably thought he wanted to hear rather than just speaking their own minds. Tanya wasn’t like that at all. She wasn’t afraid to speak her mind, even if her opinions could start an argument. It was refreshing and by the end of the date, Michel found himself anxious to see her again.
With every new date, Michel found himself liking Tanya more and more. He never knew what she would say or do, and that was something he enjoyed. So much of his life had been planned out. Even with his cases at work, they were generally very predictable. He needed that element to his life that was just completely spontaneous.
In an effort to be more spontaneous himself, Michel planned the trip to the mountains without ever mentioning it to Tanya. She had been suggesting they go away for so long, but he just never could find the time. With their two-year anniversary coming up, he figured it was about time he took the time whether his schedule was busy or not.
It took some doing to get Dean, Michel’s boss, to agree to give him the time off. They had a large case load, but Michel knew any of the other Assistant DA’s could take the cases. It was an inconvenience, but Michel’s job came with vacation time, and he had never used so much as a single day of it before, so he stayed firm with his boss who finally relented.
After taking care of all the arrangements, Michel surprised Tanya with the trip during dinner. What did you do?
Tanya asked in surprise as Michel handed her an envelope. While Michel had many great qualities, it was out of character for him to give gifts, especially when it wasn’t a special occasion, so Tanya was caught off guard. Her fingers trembled as she opened the envelope.
Are you actually nervous?
Michel asked with a chuckle. If he had thought about it, he would’ve taken his cell phone out and snapped a picture of the rare occasion.
Tanya’s eyes widened as she pulled out the brochure and cabin confirmation from the envelope. Are we really going away together? Finally?
she asked, almost afraid to let herself be happy. In the back of her mind, she half-expected something to come up that would cancel their plans. Still, just the fact that Michel had planned it all meant the world to her.
Yes! We’re finally going away...for two whole weeks, if that’s alright with you.
Tanya leaned over and gave Michel a long kiss to show her approval. For the rest
