The Beginning - Kylar Wilde
Chapter 1
As Maryanne walked back to her dorm room, she looked at the text that Andre had sent to her, before returning her phone to the pocket of her jeans. He had invited her to a party, and it was something Maryanne really wanted to attend. It wasn't going to be a normal party—hundreds of people would be there—she was sure of it. The party was happening at a house on campus. Well, house
was a bit of an understatement: the place was a mansion. It was a private place in the housing area. The invitations had gone out a few days ago, and they said that the party had been open to all who would like to be there.
Maryanne's phone rang as she walked. She brought it out of her pocket again and looked at it. Andre's name floated on the display. She ignored it. Andre was a nice person. He was a senior and had taken it as a personal project to help her and her friends get settled in when they had arrived at UCLA. He had been so nice to them—well, Tracy in particular.
Maryanne had met Tracy on their first day of classes, when both of them had gotten lost. They became friends immediately, even though Tracy was incurably shy and reserved. It had taken Maryanne more than twenty minutes to get Tracy to even say a word, but Maryanne was outspoken, and soon enough, Tracy cozied up to her.
They had met Andre that day too. He had shown them to their classes and taken them on a tour after. He had taken an instant liking to Tracy, but she would have none of it. Andre couldn't exactly get closer to Tracy, because she lived outside the campus, and she refused to tell him her address. So instead, Andre got closer to Maryanne, in hopes of getting with Tracy.
Maryanne didn't mind this, most times, but there were certain times that it got annoying. As her phone rang again, she knew it was one of those times.
Hey Andre,
Maryanne said into the phone. The sweetness in her voice masked her growing frustration. The sun did not help either. It blasted her with heat, like she had done something wrong or offended it somehow. Maryanne knew she wouldn't be able to make it to her dorm without resting a little, so as Andre's voice echoed from her phone, she decided to have a seat on a bench. She sat on a bench that was shaded by a generous tree and drew a deep breath. She let go of the breath and, only then, did she focus on what Andre was saying.
"So do
