CHAPTER ONE

There was an email in my inbox from a name I hadn’t seen in years. Gloria Hernandez. She was the most popular girl in my class at university. Most people didn’t break through the masses, but everyone knew her name. She’d sent out a mass email about a Halloween mixer for the alumni from our class.

There’d been other alumni events, but none of them were hosted by Gloria. Her invite was bubbly and sweet. Plus, she’d already gotten a ton of comments from people who said they’d attend. Alumni events weren’t something I would normally consider, but for whatever reason, I hit the button confirming I would be there.

She was hosting the Halloween event at a ritzy rooftop lounge. There were pictures of Gloria and her friends all over the event page. Parties they hosted in college. The Gloria of the past wouldn’t have invited all us strangers to her ‘exclusive’ gatherings.

The event was weeks away, but the time passed as quickly as someone snapping their fingers.

I was standing in front of my bathroom mirror, dressed in a pirate costume, complete with a long coat that came down to my knees. I had a fake sword on my hip and felt like a complete fool, but it was just one night with people I barely knew. The few friends I had were former colleagues. People I worked with before becoming a tech freelancer.

It'd be nice to meet new people. Maybe I’d make a new friend. I told myself all the good things that could happen by going to a reunion mixer instead of focusing on the bad.

I drove downtown, which was much more crowded than I’d expected. People were walking around in costumes. There were some handsome men showing off their chiseled bodies, turning my head more than a few times. There were also some girls in sexy nurse uniforms with skirts that were far too short for the weather. All types of people were walking around, which made me feel better about my outfit as I turned into an overpriced parking garage.

The party was pumping when I stepped onto the rooftop lounge. There was a man checking names at the door. He gave me a nametag and let me past the gate, where the music became even louder.

I couldn’t believe I was walking into a reunion mixer. It looked like a full-on rave, but I wasn’t complaining. My class was a recent one, so everyone was around my age. I was twenty-seven years old.
