    To my readers

    CHAPTER ONE

Alfredo Castello’s eyes glazed over as he glanced at the papers on his desk. He had a lot more on his mind than which properties he should buy in Chicago. There were dozens of info sheets his assistant, Jimmie, had gathered, but Alfredo didn’t care about any of them. He only cared about the wellbeing of his son, Ralph.

The phone sounded as Alfredo held it to his ear. He was calling Gertrude for the ninth time, but she had yet to answer. Gertrude’s answering machine picked up the call, making Alfredo curse under his breath.

Gertrude had been Ralph’s nanny until her abrupt resignation earlier that morning. She sent a message before the workday that she was taking a train to Texas to start a new life. Gertrude had written a lengthy text apologizing for the inconvenience, but that did nothing to help Alfredo as he wondered who would take care of Ralph.

Dad, can I play on my tablet now? Ralph was holding his tablet in the air.

Did you finish the worksheets I gave you?

It was summer, but Alfredo didn’t want his son to fall behind, so he’d given him math and grammar worksheets. He was studying both English and Spanish. Alfredo was from Argentina and wanted his son to speak the language of his grandparents. Alfredo’s parents would kill him if their grandson didn’t speak Spanish.

Yeah, dad. I finished them. Ralph stood and crossed the room to show Alfredo his work. Ralph had a simple desk in the corner of Alfredo’s office. He didn’t use it often, but Alfredo always took care of Ralph when Gertrude went on vacation or called in sick. Alfredo was the boss, and nobody questioned his son’s presence in the office.

I found a mistake here, son. Alfredo said to his son in Spanish. His English homework and math homework were free of errors, but Ralph needed more practice with his Spanish.

Ralph listened as his dad explained the mistake in Spanish, apologizing when his father finished.

Alfredo grinned, rubbing his hand across the top of Ralph’s head. It’s okay. We should send you to live with your grandparents for a summer or two so you can practice Spanish in Argentina. Would you like that?

Ralph nodded. Yeah, I love their farm. Can I play on my tablet now?

Sure, Alfredo said. He smiled as Ralph ran back to his desk. Ralph had spent time in Argentina, but they never went for more than a week or two.

Ever since Ralph’s mother left three years ago, he only had Alfredo. His mother, Carol, had divorced Alfredo a year after giving birth to Ralph. Then she gave up her alimony payments before fleeing to Mexico for six months. She’d since returned to her home state of Florida. She never called. No letters. No presents for Christmas.

Carol’s parents sent Ralph love, but Carol never did. Alfredo didn’t know what was wrong with her. He also didn’t have time to sort through her issues. Not when Ralph relied on him. Alfredo had a growing company. Employees. He was a father in more ways than one. He’d loved Carol with all his heart, so the best thing he could do for her was set her free.

Ever since Carol left Alfredo’s life, he’d been too busy for romance. Alfredo was bisexual. Many didn’t know that fact about him, but he didn’t have time for a man or a woman. He saw beautiful men and women everywhere he went. Some even tried to talk to him, but Alfredo focused solely on growing his business and raising his son.

Once Alfredo accepted Gertrude wasn’t returning, he knew he had to move on. Alfredo knew he couldn’t control others. If Gertrude wanted to run, she would do so no matter what he said.

    Jimmie, Alfredo hollered.

Jimmie appeared in the doorway moments later. He had been with Alfredo since he graduated from the University of Chicago with an MBA to build an empire. Alfredo also made a killing with crypto, but that money had already been reinvested into his business. He owned a few restaurants, a boutique hotel, rentals, and blighted buildings he hoped to flip. Alfredo also had money in various investments across the country. His family in Argentina was rich, but he had multiplied whatever money he got from his family several times over.

    What’s up, boss?

Alfredo glanced at Ralph, who was clearly listening to their conversation. He didn’t yet know about Gertrude leaving, and it’d break his heart if he found out. Ralph loved Gertrude, so Alfredo got up from his desk and pulled Jimmie into the hallway.

Jimmie stared at Alfredo’s dark eyes with fear in his heart. He loved his job, and Alfredo was a great boss, but he could be frightening sometimes. He commanded attention. If Alfredo said he
