#1 The mob scene at the Copa was always chaotic, and the club was packed with people betting their rent money just to feel as big as the ones who could. It was like flying for Dean and his band, and they would stop time with their songs.
#2 The casino was packed with people, and the dealers were nervous. Dean knew how to play, and he was able to push aside the blackjack dealer and start dealing around the layout: his rules.
#3 The director, Lewis Milestone, was saddled with making a movie in the middle of it. He tried to get the boss to jump through hoops for a few hours every morning, but Frank was the boss, and he didn’t care about the movie.
#4 The steam room was off limits to everyone but the inner circle. The show and the movie were, in comparison, for anyone.

The mob scene at the Copa was always chaotic, and the club was packed with people betting their rent money just to feel as big as the ones who could. It was like flying for Dean and his band, and they would stop time with their songs.
#2
The casino was packed with people, and the dealers were nervous. Dean knew how to play, and he was able to push aside the blackjack dealer and start dealing around the layout: his rules.
#3
The director, Lewis Milestone, was saddled with making a movie in the middle of it. He tried to get the boss to jump through hoops for a few hours every morning, but Frank was the boss, and he didn’t care about the movie.
#4
The steam room was off limits to everyone but the inner circle. The show and the movie were, in comparison, for anyone.
#5
Frank was a selective leader, and he chose his followers very carefully. He didn't just accept anyone who wanted to be part of his group. You had to be cool, leonine Italian, or a dazzling black ball of fire, or a British sophisticate with powerful relatives.
#6
The 1960s were a time of rebellion and indulgence, but also a time of great success for Frank Sinatra. He was drinking with this one or that one, and no one ever ran out of money. The world loved it.
#7
Sinatra was the biggest star in show business in the 1950s. He had a string of commercial hit movies, and he was the top act in nightclubs from Miami to Chicago to Las Vegas. He wanted to have an entourage of chums, and he thought it would be wonderful if they could work together.
#8
It was the high point of their lives and a midlife crisis. It was the acme of the American Century and a venal, rancid, and ugly sham. It was the Rat Pack.
Insights from Chapter 2
#1
Frank’s mother, Dolly, was a powerful woman who made sure everyone around her jumped when she commanded it. She had a foul mouth and a commanding presence, and she made sure Frank grew up with these traits.
#2
Frank was always seen as being on the cusp of good things. He was a good student, but he also liked to loaf and schmooze. He wanted to be a singer, and his mother bought him a spiffy electric P. A. system so he could sing in saloons and restaurants.
#3
Frank’s career was boosted when he joined the Dorsey orchestra in 1939. He became
