    APPENDIX

    1920 - 1939 A Forgotten World

    Alphabetical List Of The Stars

    Foreword

The word modern means relating to present or recent times. Somehow, present or recent has ceased to mean today, because today we live in the Post-modern era. Of course, that is quite impossible. We can’t live in the future. Nonetheless, it is what is, and the impossible becomes possible by the support of the avant-garde. So, we are post-modern. At one time, 1920 was as modern as one could get. Everything was happening, everything was changing, and the world was advancing into modern times.

Movies were one of these new things, and they were widely loved. Audiences flocked to the theaters, nickelodeons at first, and the movie theaters grew into palaces where the shadows on the screen were fawned over by millions. As the films pulled in enormous amounts of money, they also recorded, almost subconsciously, the zeitgeist of the time. In 1920, we are the future. Watching these films, and how they see us, that is, the future, recall we are doing the same thing. We are looking toward the future, and someday we will be the past. Today, we can look into the past as it happened, through the magic of motion pictures. In this book, I try to capture a little bit of that era through my drawings.

These drawings represent Hollywood pre-1940. Using the above post-modern terminology, the 1920s and 1930s are Pre-Modern. Many of the drawings are famous movie stars of the 20’s and 30’s, while others are random offerings from the era between the wars. Most of the drawings have been made from old photographs found on the internet. They were drawn with an Apple iPad Pro using an Apple pencil. The drawing programs have varied from Adobe Autodesk Sketchbook, Tayasui Sketches, to Procreate. No claim of artistic talent is claimed by the artist or illustrator (me). They are just fun. Have a good time remembering what once was –– and will never be again.

Thank You, Ms Janice Scanlan, JD, who provided absolutely necessary corrections.
