THE GODFATHER OF HARLEM is the latest project from Oscar-award-winner Forest Whitaker that’s got everyone talking!
Based on real events, it tells the story of notorious crime boss Bumpy Johnson, who, in the early 1960s, returned from 10 years in prison to find the neighbourhood he once ruled in shambles. During his recent visit to South Africa Forest chatted to us about portraying the infamous crime boss, growing up around gangs and what he hopes viewers will take from the story.
Before taking part in the series, how much did you know about Bumpy Johnson?
Just footnotes – I knew he was the kingpin of Harlem. I knew that he had controlled Harlem for some time. But I got a different understanding after talking to his family. There were a lot of complicated issues I didn’t know about.
