In Other Words - Douglas Owens
Balladry
Stories are the gift of life, if we let ourselves see.
THE HISTORY
––––––––
A king had come along
He sang the peasants’ song
But woe to their joyful glee
In his heart was larceny
––––––––
As the evil bursar oversees
Those raped by poverty
He scrapes their bitter toil
Until they lay under soil
––––––––
The lords of the manor sing
As the servants will bring
Joy to them and their ilk
In their finery and their silk
––––––––
And the power of dynasty
Which is the true infamy
Guilt is levied as peasant’s sin
They but victims to the wind
––––––––
Blowing hard like a gale
Yet is unseen, a stealthy veil
Wrapping up the society
Dressed as a gift of piety
PERU
––––––––
Walking the ancient paths
that the Inca once strolled
the women in their bowlers
and men in woolen clothes
––––––––
The nod of the alpaca
as they meander on
the fields in the foothills
past the chiseled stone
––––––––
Patterned blankets hang
along the Andean slope
as the winds snap hard
above the winter snow
––––––––
The condors of the Culca
ride the hallowed winds
as the ancient cultures
till in the far andenes
––––––––
In the sacred valley
sit the twisted trees
of ancient Qotacalla
amid the jungle steam
SOME PEOPLE
Some people
Live in memories
Only they can see
Detached from today
––––––––
Some people
Have all they need
Their lives so simple
Living in a dream
––––––––
Some people
See days passing
Yet are never ready
To fade into nothing
––––––––
Some people
Rant about the lord
Scolding all others
For what’s in store
––––––––
Some people
Hurt beg and steal
With no remorse
As is their will
––––––––
Some people
Have so much hope
As many others
Choose the rope
PLAY
––––––––
I want to play
a melody in tune
when I am thinking
thinking about you
––––––––
Over by the fountain
there is a sculpture
of sweet nymphs playing
in their gay rapture
––––––––
The eagles cry above
the swaying Douglas fir
as the balloons gather
in their rising burn
––––––––
And as I look upward
into to the cyan sky
kites in
