The thing I hated most about long journeys was always the middle. You couldn’t control your starting point, and the destination could very well be unknown, but the hard yards in between could be so perplexing that they could leave you wishing you’d never started in the first place.

The drone of tyres on the tarmac always made for profound contemplation, especially when the mix tape had run out.

    What do you actually want?

As I stared at the endless white lines, I said this aloud, wrestling with my desires as my battered Ford Fiesta ate up the miles between West Wales and Hertfordshire. Part of the answer lay in the mountains, but the events that had shaped my new self felt hazy and dreamlike as if I was watching a home movie of my life.

I knew that a different ‘me’ had driven into Wales all those weeks ago. The girl who’d arrived in the valleys, determined to find an adventure, couldn’t imagine what lay waiting for her. She would have blushed, turned her tail and ran to avoid leaving her comfort zone, finding solace in books, at peace with her introverted nature.

So, what had happened? Was the girl partly still there, or was a sexually awakened and liberated woman standing in her place, or was she a hybrid of the two?

The truth was, I didn’t know. The gloriously evocative memories of my lustful encounters with Selina, Amy, and Jacob were burned into my brain forever. Still, something about leaving and the miles one put down had a habit of muddying the waters. I didn’t know if I’d feel the same when I returned home to my family and familiar routine, so I turned up the stereo and concentrated on the white lines ahead, trying to push the images aside - the ones that involved tongues and kissing and ghosts.

I arrived home to the welcoming arms of my family and spent the rest of the time I had in my old bedroom getting my head together for the new term. Falling asleep late that night, the last thing in my vision was my pendant necklace, lying under the lamp on my bedside table, the only tangible thing to connect me to my adventures.

The following morning, I had to be down in Bristol by midday and began to feel stressed. My dad admonished me about the lack of engine oil in the Ford, saying that it was a miracle it had survived. I kissed him briefly, telling him with a smile that that was what dads were for.

I burned rubber again, back along the M4, and reunited with my housemate, Jill, who I was pleased to see again, and we swapped stories of our summer adventures. Jill hadn’t done much with her summer hols, and I gave her a heavily censored version of my trip. We fell back into studying hard, realising how much we still had to do, and it was another two weeks before I thought about Selina and Amy.

Jill and I had hit it off instantly when we met, despite being very different personalities. This created a harmonious atmosphere around the flat; her yin for my yang. During this new term, however, I found that my heart would race for no good reason, or I’d get a sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach, propelling me into a surprising depression. I made excuses to avoid going out or finding reasons to explore the outskirts of town, which I’d never done before. Consequently, Jill and I saw each other less, and I couldn’t help but think it was me who’d changed, not her.

One evening, I found myself rummaging through my handbag and found the business card for the Black Bull Inn. I left Jill watching X-files and headed out to give Selina a call from the payphone down the street. I could have used the one in the flat, but I didn’t feel I could share my conversation just now. I dialled the number and waited. Selina picked up, and her full, rich tones caressed my ear.

Hello, this is the Black Bull Inn. How can I help you?

Oh, hello, I’d like to book your most haunted room please, I’m in desperate need of a good shag!

I closed my eyes and listened to her delectable laugh.

"Oh, Bethie, you are so naughty! Just as well you didn’t call a couple of seconds ago, I had an elderly couple standing right by
