    1. The Visitor

Nikki Grayson was lonely. The morning had begun early with the usual routine, coffee with the radio on, then a walk up the village with Sam, her bounding spaniel. The early spring sun was trying it's best to dry the dew off the grass and daffodils, pleasantly warming the skin after a long, miserable English winter.

She collected the newspaper from the drab post-office that served as the village shop, and stopped halfway home to chat with an old villager, Bill, who leant on his garden gate, watching the world go by.

Mornin, Miss Nikki, he grunted, a wolfish grin on his stubbled features. Nikki, who knew she wouldn't get away with just a pleasantry, paused and flashed him a broad smile.

Morning, Bill! How are we this morning? She liked Bill. He was older than the hills, but he knew how to charm the young mums as they passed by his garden.

But you are looking lovely today, my dear!

This was true. She was a natural beauty, tall with a good figure, with stunning looks that were mellowing into luxuriant middle-age. Her blonde hair was done in a loose braided bun, and untied lengths framed her tanned face. She laughed, lines creasing the corners of her dark eyes.

Bill! I'm not even dressed up today!

This was also true, although she had put a bit of effort into her look this morning, wearing tight blue jeans and a white tee shirt with a short-sleeved, navy blazer. She had finished this off with a pair of wellies. Bill shook his head appreciatively, his ancient face wrinkling.

No, but you're a real head-turner, nonetheless! When you gonna get yourself another man, eh?

Nikki felt herself blushing. She knew this would come up; it always did. She didn't mind it from Bill, he was just looking out for her, that was all. Her smile became even broader, knowing that it was way past worrying about laughter lines.

Oh, Bill! Why on earth would I need another man in my life, when I've got Sam here, and you, to keep me feeling on top of the world! She flashed another brilliant smile at him, ignoring the creeping loneliness stealing into her chest.

Aye, Bill grunted. Evidently, he’d said enough on the subject. How's your garden? You want to go and divide them primroses soon.

Nikki welcomed the change of subject, and enthusiastically chatted with him. She loved her garden and loved hearing about its history. Once, Bill had told her about the family that lived there when he'd been a boy, who had a tragedy of some sort, but hadn't elaborated. Sometime, she must get him to tell her more, but not now; Sam was getting desperate to move on, whining and pulling on his lead. Bill nodded and let her go.

You go and have a good 'un.

And you have a wonderful day too, Bill! Nikki exclaimed warmly. She leant in towards his unshaven cheek and planted an unexpected kiss there, fondly noting Old Spice and pipe tobacco.

She continued up the damp pavement, her spaniel leading the way, knowing that Bill would be admiring her jean-clad behind as she went. She didn't mind. It would have been different with a group of builders or workmen though.

As she walked through the village, she returned to what he’d said about needing a man. It had been a while. She’d been in the village for three months, a divorcee, with two boys nearly fully grown, one at university, the other training for the army. The split had been difficult. She felt no urge to re-enter the dating scene yet.

She turned into her cottage garden and closed the gate behind her, letting Sam off the lead. Primroses were beginning to shoot up, the scent of spring was all around. Closing her eyes, she felt the sun's rays on her eyelids. It was so peaceful and quiet here, but again, there was that pang of emptiness. She opened her eyes. This was no good; she needed to be busy. The garden awaited. A coffee would be good too.

In the kitchen, she took off her blazer and flicked the kettle on, her eyes not really taking in everything on the newspaper's front page. Why did she buy this rubbish, anyway? More for the walk, and the social interaction with the two, no, wait, three people she had talked to.

It was chilly in the kitchen, and her arms had goose bumps as she made the coffee. The trouble with these old stone houses was that they had a welcoming cool in the hottest of summers, but a decided chill if there was no heating on. She had found this to be slightly random, as some rooms were worse than others, particularly the kitchen. The warmest one was the living room, which had patio doors to the garden. The sun would enter these most of the day, if it was out.

She was lucky, though, she thought as she
