A Little Bit About a Lot - Danny El Hassan
Chapter One: Writing my first E-Book / Studying Psychology / Therapy and Integrated Health Care / Research
As an early career Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC), a lot of people have asked me the following questions: What research have you previously been a part of? What topics interest you in psychology? When did you begin studying psychology? Have you ever been to therapy? Do you have specialty areas? Questions like these and others have contributed to the desire I have had to write this brief book. It’s with a sense of pride that I present you with my first book. The abbreviated title of the book is aptly, A Little Bit about a Lot. The book contains many things including an abundance of fictional case examples to illustrate varied topics.
I am proud of what the book accomplishes. It is meant to be accessible to curious readers of psychology. In fact, the intention of this book is very limited in scope and the bullet points below expand on what is and is not in this brief book. The book spans many topics, but it does not even attempt to do so with the depth that would be necessary to do anything beyond scratch the surface of each topic discussed. While it covers a breadth of topics, it does so without the depth and nuance of a more specialized book, often presenting only a single fictional example that is relatively brief in length. Knowing what the book IS and IS NOT is essential to understanding the goals of the book. If you are thinking to yourself, each topic could be multiple books in themselves, you are absolutely correct, and I could not agree more.
So, what IS in this brief e-book? As indicated in the table of contents, the book discusses or provides fictional case examples for varied topics including depression, anxiety, OCD, select psychopathology, disability, neurodiversity, LGBTQ+ issues, select topics (telehealth, geriatrics, homelessness, HIV, crisis, and resilience), and provides poetry on topics related to mental health.. It should be noted that all case examples in the book are fictional. Hopefully, after reading the table of contents and the above, you have some sense of what IS in the book, even if limited. Let’s continue by clarifying briefly some things the book IS NOT.
What this brief e-book IS NOT:
It is NOT a case formulation for the fictional case of depression and anxiety, rather an application of some aspects of major theoretical perspectives to the case. It is also noted the application of the theories is very limited use of these major theories, only looking at one or two aspects of the theory. For the OCD chapter and Select Pathology chapter, it is meant only to illustrate fictional case examples.
For all the pathologies and topics in the book, it is NOT meant to demonstrate every symptom or even the threshold of symptoms necessary for a diagnosis, only to provide some sense of how an individual might present.
It is NOT meant to be utilized for self-diagnosis. If you feel you have any of the pathologies described, it is important to consult an appropriate professional and avoid self-diagnoses.
In some case examples, I will refer to a pathology without giving more specifics (e.g. referring to someone as having depression as opposed to something more specific such as major depressive disorder- Moderate Severity, Single Episode) as I am emphasizing some other aspect of the case.
It is NOT a comprehensive look at all topics or even a significant amount of topics related
