Lee Hacklyn Private Investigator in The Moonshining - John Leister

    NEW YORK CITY.  1977.

    CHAPTER ONE

    That’s him.

I was parked across the street from Kennedy High School on a cold Monday morning in November.

The heat in my sweet ride, a white Dodge Charger, was on the fritz.

No offense, if you’re German, Dear Reader.

That was a 70s thing to say.

The man sitting in my passenger seat, Principal Fenwick Fretter, was a good sport about it, although the chattering of his teeth was straight out of a Hanna-Barbera cartoon.

He wore a wool cap over his bald head—no toupee for this man, good for you, sir; and a black leather jacket, with the collar turned up, over his conservative suit.

The Fonzie of high school principals.

I lit a Blue Buzzard and asked him, Are you a guitar player?

    I never get asked that.

    Sorry, I’m shameless.

No, but I worry about a lot.

    That made me laugh.

The person of our attention was idly in a Green Cadillac, parked right behind us.

    SPOILER WARNING!

There was a spoiler on the trunk.

This man didn’t suffer a scintilla of status anxiety.  No, sir!

He wore a cowboy hat with diamonds studded around the brim, sunglasses with lenses shaped like stars and a fearsome scar ran down his face.

    Self-inflicted, tough guy?

    He chewed on a matchstick.

There were so many gold chains around his neck, it looked immobilized.

He was um, something other than white, in his late twenties and he grinned like life was grand and his troubles were few.

I was about to multiply them.

An-ti-ci-pay-ay-tion is often the best part of this job.

He waved at two teenaged girls, they checked out his car, looked impressed and headed towards him.

I opened my car and shut it.

    Parade?

Allow me to introduce you to Rain AKA Thunderstorm.

    Now that’s a name for a superhero.

    CHAPTER TWO

I cleared my throat and said, Good morning, ladies.  Class starts at nine and you don’t want to be late.

I showed them my license and they ran
