This year, Charisma is going to close the restaurant for the first time on Christmas Day to give her parents a break. But for some reason, when Jake Austin shows up at the restaurant, something inside of Charisma makes her change her mind.

Prologue
Charisma
Christmas Day 1 Year Ago
THERE HE WAS AGAIN. Alone, aloof, almost arrogant.
Once again hidden behind the large menu my father insisted on keeping, the lone man sat at a corner table of my family’s Chinese restaurant.
After all, we were the only place open on this Christmas day. Many families, looking to get away from a night of cooking and washing dishes, came in with their children, many with the grandparents, and all were smiling, happy and festive.
The lone man was uninterested in it all. Like every other year, he spoke to no one, looked at no one. He simply ordered, ate and left.
This year, I’d seen him walk in. Tall and lean, he held a stern expression in his deep blue eyes. His dark hair was kept short in the back while he had a tousle of curls above his brow. His style of dress was casual and lowkey. His dark gray slacks and plain blue shirt were a far cry from the crazy and silly Christmas sweaters many of the other patrons wore.
Charisma,
my father said, startling me as he came up from behind. We’ve got mouths to feed. Why are you just standing there?
It’s just so strange,
I whispered, my eyes still on the lone man.
Oh,
my father said as he followed the direction of my gaze. Him again. It is strange, isn’t it?
he said with a chuckle. Every Christmas.
Yeah.
He turned his stern business eye to me. Go see what he wants.
Urgh,
I let out.
There was something about him that was cold and unappealing. He was a Christmas downer. I felt chipper and happy and feared he would ruin that.
Sure thing, Dad,
I finally said.
For the past four years he’d been coming to the Chen Family Cuisine restaurant that my family ran. For the past four years, he arrived with a just-another-Tuesday expression on his face. For the past four years he sat at the same table, not speaking to anyone except to give his order.
Well, at least he had the courtesy to say thank you when served.
Two years earlier, when my dad decided to stop accepting cash, I’d learned that the lone man’s name was Jake Austin. Or at least that’s the name that appeared on his credit card.
I walked up to his table wondering if he was lonely. If I struck up a conversation, would he engage or rebuff?
Hmm. Was that stern look in his eyes due to his loneliness... or was it the reason he was always alone?
Hello,
I said as I reached his table. Hello and merry Christmas.
He grunted.
Would you like a bit more time to make your decision?
No,
he said without lowering the menu one bit. I’ll have the number eight for one, no soup.
Perfect.
I reached out and took the menu away from him.
I looked into his face for the briefest moment. He really was a very good-looking man, despite the hard and unfriendly eyes. One could have easily mistaken him for a model or even an actor.
As I walked away, my mind’s eye was filled with the image of his face. I couldn’t help but wonder what he looked like when he smiled. Was he capable of smiling?
A number eight for one,
I called out when I reached the kitchen.
Great.
My younger sister, Sally, cried out as she walked in behind me. At twenty-four, she’d repeatedly shown her devotion to her work at the family restaurant. Smart and serious, she also tended to be on the shy side, making it at times difficult for her to go out and be among people.
I get the family of twelve,
she went on. They ordered a number two for two, and number seven for one and a number one for... Oh, I don’t even know anymore.
She looked to our father with that pouting little face that usually got her what she wanted. How come she gets the easy table?
I smiled at her. Don’t be jealous, little sister. He might be alone, but he is the worst curmudgeon that you can imagine. Never says anything. Never even looks up when he orders. Like he’s an Emperor or something. What’s with that?
At least he’s a generous tipper,
Tammy, my youngest sister, said as she set various bowls of food on a large tray. At twenty, she didn’t take her work at the restaurant very seriously, but being the baby of the family, she usually got away with it. Last year I served him, and he left a pretty nice tip.
You should know, Charisma,
Sally said to me. He’s always sat in your section. Same table. Christmas Day. Every year. You’re overworked with your studies for PhD, that you’re just going through the motions of order taking, yourself. You’ve really never noticed the customers.
I laughed. That’s not true.
I agree,
Tammy called out as she hoisted the heavy tray up to her shoulder level and headed for the door. If you did, you’d notice he’s close to your age, and pretty good-looking.
Sally sighed, Like a hot book boyfriend from one of my favorite D.R. Love steamy books.
I shook my head. Sally was a hopeless romantic.
You two leave your sister alone,
Dad said, saying it loud enough to ensure that Tammy heard his comment as well. She could have taken this day to relax or study... USC’s Digital Technology program in the Annenberg graduate program mustn’t be easy. She’s the only one getting a doctorate in it. But instead, she came all the way down to Chinatown to help us out.
Thanks, Dad,
I said, happy to see that he recognized the sacrifice I was making.
And,
Dad went on, if your sister wants to waste all her time paying attention to the handsome and clearly single man in the room, well that’s her prerogative.
He winked at me, and my sisters burst out laughing.
Dad,
I whined.
I looked into his playful eyes.
