About this ebook

“A graphic mystery for the elementary-school set . . . For readers looking for something spirited, smart, and spicy, this definitely fits the bill.” —Booklist (starred review)

Marin loves the sandwiches his parents make for him—every day they’re different and more delicious than the last. One morning, someone dares to steal his favorite sandwich: ham-cheddar-kale. Furious, Marin begins a fevered and famished investigation to unmask the thief. The days go by, the suspects multiply, and Marin’s sandwiches continue to disappear.

This droll, graphic caper is a funny school mystery exploring the high stakes of low blood sugar. The first in a series, the book’s witty text and graphic illustrations make this perfect for early and advanced readers alike—and for anyone who’s been the victim of lunchtime crime.

“To do something that feels fresh with this sub-genre is no easy feat, which makes André Marois and Patrick Doyon’s very funny The Sandwich Thief all the more remarkable . . . A masterful example of how to build tension and atmosphere in children’s literature, both in the text and the illustrations.” —Kinderlit

The Sandwich Thief - Andre Marois

    Monday Morning

    Lunchtime!

I was the first to stand up when the bell rang. I rushed out of class, grabbed my lunch box, and sprinted down the halls to the cafeteria.

We’re not supposed to run in the halls, but no grown–ups saw me. (Still, I was on alert. It had rained, so I had to look out for the puddles of water on the second floor.)

As usual, I sat between Axel and Sophie. But:

My sandwich! What happened? What’s wrong with it? (Axel is my best friend. We don’t actually talk much, but we understand each other.) (Sophie is my best girl friend. Not my girlfriend, just a friend who’s a girl. We don’t talk much either, but we like each other a lot.)

I dumped my lunch box out on the table.

All that fell out was an apple, a granola bar, orange juice, and my dad’s note. (Papa writes me a note every day.)

My sandwich is missing. Are you sure you brought it?Of course! My Monday sandwich is ham, cheddar, and kale—my favorite.Someone must have stolen it.

We all looked at each other. Then we looked at everyone around us. It wasn’t a pretty sight. Or sound. Everyone was chomping, mouths wide open. You could see little pieces of mashed apple, crushed chips, chocolate chip
