Twenty minutes.

Twenty. Long. Minutes.

Who in their right mind would think it was acceptable to be waiting twenty minutes unanswered in the most tragic moment of their life?

Excuse… I called to the nurse rushing past me in the large, nearly empty emergency room.

As I watched her hurry away, the soft squeak of her sneakers echoed around the nineties-looking waiting room, I took the deep breaths that were recommended to me by my annoyingly calm therapist.

Deep breath in… One.

Long, slow breath out… Two.

And repeat.

Mom would be happy to hear how I was actually using the therapeutic techniques after fighting her for so long to give therapy a chance.

As I breathed, my eyes searched for something other than the ticking clock positioned above the front desk. The stack of manila folders was haphazardly arranged. The cozy cable-knit sweater which was about to fall off the black, leather chair behind the desk. Or the elderly man who was sitting so still in the waiting room merely four chairs away that he was making it difficult to determine if he was alive purely by his motionless state of being.

Code blue. A loud, automated voice sounded on the speaker overhead.
