Miracles
by Ursula Bergman
Can you say that you've been touched
Has a miracle happened to you
A magical, beautiful, unexplainable thing
Enforcing your faith is true
Are you worthy of such a gift
Do you wonder why God chose you
Your world corrected, rewritten, repaired
Sick lost lives made new
An accident clearly spared
A love fixed that was damaged and lost
A body healed where there never was hope
So what did the miracle cost
It's a gift that comes from our Lord
The greatest proof of God's only Son
Miraculous Savior with unending love
Accessible to everyone
So pray for miracles my child
God's love is precious and true
Pray your worries away, your sicknesses gone
Knowing always the Lord Jesus loves you

Special thanks to The Garden Worship Center, Belleview, Florida.
We want to express our sincere thanks to the members of our congregation who came forward with their testimonials for this book. Their response was so overwhelming we could not include all of them. They were wonderful stories, stories that happened recently or ones they have kept close to their hearts for years and still hold them in wonder and gratitude.
We thank all the members of the Wednesday morning Bible study who were the inspiration for this book and who helped with the development and marketing of it. We especially thank Andreen and Dave Todnem, Josie and Jerry Jennings, and Mary Hotopp for their contributions, which got this project off the ground.
We thank our pastor, Norman Lee Schaffer, and his wife, Terri, for their enthusiasm for this church building fund project. A big thanks to our church office staff, Ursula Bergman and Lyn Littrell, who took our phone calls, directed church members to us, and squeezed us into the pastor's schedule.
But, most of all, we thank that loving but firm voice that directed Bill to Finish the book. Finish the book. Finish the book!

Introduction—Signs and Wonders
Not so long ago, my wife, Pat, and I were leading a Bible study group in our community church, The Garden Worship Center. We were studying the book of Acts, which is a record of the apostles' actions after the death, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus.
Before His crucifixion, Jesus told the apostles of His impending death. He told them that His death was necessary in order that the Comforter, the Holy Spirit, would come to them. Jesus said, Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you
(John 16:7).
The apostles were confused and didn't understand.
Jesus was captured, crucified, died, buried, and three days later, rose from the dead. After forty days, He ascended into heaven, giving the apostles their final charge: Take the Gospel to every corner of the earth.
The apostles were at a total loss. They went into hiding in the upper room, the same room where they had their last meal with Jesus. They were frightened, wondering how they could possibly fulfill Jesus's final command. But then, ten days after Jesus ascended into heaven, came the miracle!
The apostles' deep despair was interrupted by tongues of fire, and they were filled with the power of the Holy Spirit. They were given the power to preach the Gospel and the power to perform miracles.
Miracles are extraordinary events that can't be explained by natural laws. A miracle is an unusual event, thing, or accomplishment considered to be the work of God. Miracles can be an astonishing answer to prayer.
The power of the Holy Spirit performed miracles through God's Son, Jesus Christ. The miracles, or signs and wonders, confirmed the Gospel message. The miracles confirmed that Jesus was who He said He was—the Son of God, the prophesied Messiah that the Jewish people had waited for so long.
The Bible gives us a record of many of the miracles that Jesus performed. He cast out demons; He healed the blind, the deaf, and paralyzed people. And, amazingly, He raised people from the dead. Jesus said, Believe me when I say that I am in the Father, and the Father is in me, or at least believe on the evidence of the works themselves
(John 14:11).
Jesus's miracles proved that He had supernatural power and that He was indeed the Son of God. Miracles are a pillar of Christian faith. We believe in miracles and the power of prayer. Jesus told us, Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to my Father. And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If ye shall ask anything in my name, I will do it
(John 14:12–14).
These are amazing statements, and more amazing, Jesus demonstrated the empowerment of believers during His three-year ministry and mission on earth. Jesus chose twelve men to be His apostles. These men were not geniuses, they were not priests, they were not extraordinary. They were fishermen, tradesmen, and two politicians. Jesus taught them the meaning of Scripture and that the prophesies of the coming Messiah had been fulfilled. He asked Peter, Who do you say I am?
(Matthew 16:15–16), and Peter answered, You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.
Before leaving the earth and returning to heaven, Jesus gave the apostles His last instruction, to go and change the world: You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth
(Acts 1:8).
The apostles would become the first evangelists. They would build the foundations of the Christian church. Jesus gave them the power to speak in foreign languages and dialects with confidence and authority.
It was a tough assignment. After all, the apostles were total strangers in the towns that they visited. They were poor and probably looked like vagabonds. They were down-to-earth men preaching a message of love and salvation that would turn their dogmatic religious doctrine and pagan world upside down. The apostles would need credentials
to complete this incredible mission. And Jesus gave them a calling card
to help them, a calling card that would get the attention of the people living in these dusty small towns and population centers in the Middle East and Europe. It would get the attention of corrupt religious leaders, fanatical pagans, and despots as well.
Their calling card?
Miracles! They performed dramatic and powerful miracles that could not be denied or hidden. They healed the sick, the blind, the lame, and the dying. The apostles had the power of undeniable miracles that could not be ignored and demonstrated that they were indeed apostles, empowered by God through Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit.
As you will read in the following chapters, Jesus still performs miracles today. Miracles happen if it is God's will and in His character. Our objective in this book is to share testimonies of miracles received by members of our church. These testimonies demonstrate God's intervention in people's lives and clearly illustrate the power and presence of our living God. We pray that you get to know Him better, that you believe Jesus is your Savior, and that you, too, will be blessed with miracles through the power of the Holy Spirit as needed in your life.
