My Personal Calling,
by God, to Serve Him
A person can be called to serve Jesus Christ full-time in many different ways, at different places and times.
The first time I felt God’s call on my life, I was a very young man. I had just been saved at a tent revival in Fayetteville, North Carolina. I made an appointment to see the military chaplain as I was in the army at that time. The chaplain didn’t keep the appointment. After I waited a long period of time, I decided that maybe God didn’t call me, after all.
Over the next twenty years of military service, I would feel God calling at different times, but I never did anything about it.
After I retired from military duty, I was living in Denison, Texas, enjoying the good life of a civilian. God got my attention one last time. I remember it very well. Early one morning, the house was quiet. My son had gone to school. My wife was sewing. I was sleeping or trying to. It was still dark outside. I was awakened by a bright light in the bedroom. I went to the window to see what it was. No lights were on outside; even the streetlights were out. As I turned around toward the bed, the bright light again shone on the wall. It began to take the shape of a person. When I realized that it was Jesus Christ, I fell down on my knees. My legs gave out in weakness. The face of Christ was clear. There was a crown of thorns on his head, and blood was running down his face. His eyes seemed to look right through me. They were shining with tears. Some of His beard had been plucked out, and he looked very sad. Jesus Christ did not say one word to me verbally; however, I could hear Him say, Go and tell them what I did for them.
Then He disappeared.
I went to tell my wife what had happened. As soon as she saw me, she quickly guided me to a chair to sit, asking What is wrong? You look like you have seen a ghost.
My only answer to her was Honey, I’ve got to preach about Jesus.
She didn’t understand what I was uttering, so she asked me again. This time I clearly stated I have got to start preaching about Jesus now.
She immediately called our pastor. She felt it was urgent. Apparently, he did too because he came right out to our home.
After my visit with the pastor, I wouldn’t talk to anyone about my experience. I didn’t really know what to do until I had time to pray through the situation.
As a boy, I had been taught if anything unusual happened to you or if you saw something out of the ordinary, just keep it to yourself or else people would think that you were lying or making up stories to get attention.
Some will believe and some won’t, but that is not important. What is important is to go and tell.
I’m about at my journey’s end in life. Perhaps some will read my testimony and know why I turned my life around so completely when I had such a promising future in the ways of the world. I took the best road that was ever made: that of following Jesus Christ.
