INTRODUCTION
Begin to embrace each day as a unique life, a complete entity in itself. Those who live this way, treating each day as a rounded whole, find tranquility in their minds.
- Seneca.
Seneca narrated a story of an acquaintance who rose from poverty to success, but unfortunately passed away just as his hard work was bearing fruit. This made me realize the uncertainty of life, how we are bound by mortality, and how it is unwise to recklessly assume we have endless time to achieve grand plans. In the past, I used to make ambitious plans for the distant future at the start of each year, yet very few of those plans materialized.
However, I eventually grasped the importance of not just setting goals, but cultivating daily habits to attain them. Seneca suggested making grand plans for each quality day, understanding that if we live each day well and accumulate enough such days, we will ultimately lead a fulfilling life. This concept was truly eye-opening, but it didn’t instantly transform my life. I remained discontented and dissatisfied, as the knowledge had not yet taken root in my actions.
In my youth, I observed people treating their ideas as mere accessories to their social image, superficial and devoid of genuine substance. Determined to seek deeper perspectives, I turned to reading old books. Among them, Marcus Aurelius’ Meditations introduced me to philosophy and Stoicism, which profoundly impacted my life. Stoicism became my guiding principle, helping me gain control over my emotions, which previously influenced my decisions negatively.
Our minds hold a vast reservoir of information and experiences that shape our beliefs and values. Some of these beliefs may not be conducive to our well-being, yet we rarely question them or work to improve our lives intentionally. Embracing Stoicism involves bringing these beliefs to our conscious awareness, actively choosing what to believe and live by, and discarding unnecessary mental baggage.
Stoics such as Marcus Aurelius and Epictetus emphasized the power of our thoughts in shaping our experiences. Our minds act as lenses that color our perception of life; negative beliefs lead to suffering, while positive ones contribute to a good life. Fortunately, we have the ability to change our beliefs and, consequently, our experiences. Stoic philosophy provides practical and actionable strategies, readily available from its vast collection of wisdom, enabling us to lead a good
