The epic of the huddle
Paula Fanelli
Belén Galain has long been interested in the reverberations of the words part/depart, of the experience of exile. When she learned of Elena’s existence, she contacted her immediately. Elena is a person of flesh and blood who had an ideal for which she fought and forced her into exile. She is the person from whom Belén drew the inspiration to write De(parted). Back in 2018, they had tea. But it was several years before Belén put words to that meeting.
Words are a mysterious tool: how is it possible that a set of signs next to each other, huddled together, sometimes separated, are able to move us, to build a bridge between the speaker and the listener? Well combined, they are capable of disarming what we are for a while, individuals trapped in our solitude, and suddenly we are one with the other, we can access that other story as if it were our own and thus expand what we are, and little by little what seems to be an individual widens and we become a huddle of other experiences.
But words can also be a trap, they can become a labyrinth. Elena gets entangled in language. She believes that it is a matter of being precise, clinical, If I can make people understand what it means to de(part), then they will understand me
, and she gets into this labyrinth that draws her increasingly away from the others. And here Belén’s humor appears, she knows that words are mischievous. That it is not about linguistic precision, that it is not enough to use the right words for something to happen, that magic is necessary, the thing is combining them in that mysterious way that suddenly makes the event become present, and pass through our body. Belén knows that words can be wizards, they have the ability to pass through our bodies and build experiences without having lived them. The fictional Elena and Belén Galain are facing the same drama: how to make experience come to life.
On March 24, 2023 Claudia Cantero made a performance reading of De(parted) under the direction of the author. On that occasion, Elena was in the audience. The Elena of inspiration. At the end of the reading, she came to the microphone, and softly said that she was happy about what had happened, what we had witnessed in that reading, the story of an average person, an ordinary person who made a whole lot of history, but that perhaps the names of this
