Author

Harvey Cappel

Harvey Cappel is a semiretired mechanical engineer. As of this writing, he is still married to Betty, a relationship that has endured fifty-five years of one day at a time—during Christmas season, it’s hour by hour. This produced, as of this writing, four kids, seven grandkids, and five great grandkids. Suffering from “cant remember s----(CRS)” he says he can’t be exactly sure of his age at their wedding, but being good at math, he claims it must have been when he was about nine years old. Among his life adventures, he has been a business owner, Texas licensed professional engineer, certified electronics technician, full-scale airplane pilot, United States marine, inventor, amateur writer, local newspaper guest writer, small newspaper owner, antique car restoration mechanic, semipro drag race car driver and mechanic, and is currently a part-time windstorm engineer and radio-control model-airplane pilot instructor. And according to his wife, seriously immature for his age.

    Preface

My first published book True Story, I Swear It- Maybe was a collection of life stories, mostly humorous. This one, like the first, is a collection of short stories. Some humorous, some serious, many of which were published in our local newspaper The Daily News a Galveston County, Texas newspaper. I have been a guest writer for the newspaper for many years, and previously owned my own newspaper for about two years. I have written stories for numerous magazines both local and national; some were paying jobs. I love writing and telling stories.

As the title indicates I’m not a fan of the scare tactics of AI, as I never was of Y2K. I know, and you should too, that there are no seashores in Arizona. Just another BS story in the same category as the Y2K was and the AI is now. Artificial Intelligence is just sophisticated computer programming to make life easier and businesses more efficient; that’s all. I intend to make this as clear and unscary as I can with a few short stories in the first few chapters of the book.

I am a Texas licensed professional engineer and amateur (usually not paid) story teller. As an engineer, I am trained to solve problems, thus some of the stories are my suggestions to solve some of life’s problems. As a story teller I am not bound by the truth so, I don’t have to do much research to tell a story. If you doubt what I say, in any of my stories, you are free to tell the world I am wrong. In my book, if it’s funny, and or entertaining it doesn’t have to be 100% true; in fact, it rarely is. So, if true is absolutely necessary for you, may I suggest a Webster’s dictionary. Just kidding; don’t quit reading, you just might agree with some of my proposed life solutions and maybe enjoy my fun stories.

You will note that the contents/chapter list is in alphabetical order. I thought that mixing up the stories would keep the reader from getting bored and, trying to second guess my next thoughts and, heaven forbid, skipping a story.

By the way, my late wife advised young girls to not marry an engineer that’s also, a story teller. The engineer thinks he knows everything, and the story teller never shuts up. She was right.

And finally, if you have not already bought and read my first book, True Story, I Swear It - Maybe, please do; I could use some pocket change. It’s mostly, nearly true, humorous life stories.

    Please Enjoy

    Dedication

To my late wife, Betty, my kids, grandkids, great grand kids and true friends.

I am writing this book in October of 2023. I lost my wife in December of 2022. In my view, a part of heaven is never completely leaving the ones you love; being remembered and felt present every day. My late wife is part of my heaven as is the new love of my current life.

I apologize for starting this book on a sad note; but really it isn’t. Betty’s life, was well lived, and her everyday presence is not sad. We were together physically for more than 66-1/2 years and married 64-1/2 years. One of the first stories in this book is a love story; our story. Please enjoy the love story and then enjoy my intended, fun, potential enlightenment and educational stories in the rest of the book.

And to the new love of my life, my fiancée. For more on that story read Another Love Story in this book.

    Thanks Betty

You Might Have the Wrong Book - IF

You are content to be like everyone else.

    You can’t think for yourself.

You are too lazy to do your homework and pay your dues.

You are afraid of failure and afraid to ask dumb questions.

You are afraid of what someone else will say or think about you.

You think your education is complete at any time before your death.

You actually think you won money at a gambling Casino.

You think your insurance company will ever pay you more than you pay them.

You think you can build a better car cheaper than Ford or GM.

You think you can make money in the stock market with a good tip and a phone call.

You don’t recognize that you started with near nothing in terms of your worth and probably still have most of it.

You think a patent will protect your invention. More on that later, maybe.

You think retirement is about stopping shaving and living in a rocking chair. Good luck on surviving more that another 5 to 10 years.

You think fishing is about the fish finding you.

You think winning is about winning; it’s really about stop losing.

You are happy with someone else counting your money.

You think trading your problems with someone else will be a good idea.

You think heaven is a place.

You don’t understand that, you are no more likely to figure out where from you came or how you got here than a cow is to understanding Algebra. Both of you are severely lacking in brain development.

You think you are special, when in fact, you had nothing to do with where you were born nor whom were your parents. If you are doing ok, thank luck for the head start.

You think gambling Casinos with their super expensive, fancy hotels are giving away more money than a run down 7-11 corner store. They take money and, at best, give a good time. Next time a friend says he/she was winning at the Casino ask why did they stop and leave before winning all their money.

You don’t know about lemmings. You could be genetically kin.

AI – (1) My Credentials Regarding AI

I’m about to have much to say about Artificial Intelligence (AI) so, I think it appropriate that you (the reader) have some knowledge of my education, experience, and background in intelligence technology.

First of all, I did not graduate from high school till I was 81 years old, but I finally did. Really, a true story, I swear it. That story, later in this book.

First half of my senior year in high school I was flunking English Literature. I would have to make 140 on the final exam to pass. Being good at math, and dumb smart, I knew that it would be a waste of my time to take the final exam, so I went swimming that day. A couple of my friends in the same boat took the exam and made 140 and passed. Not me, I got a zero.

I tried to fix the problem in the second half with a correspondence course but did not finish in time to graduate, with my class. The next morning, after I did not graduate from high school, I got married (the day I turned 18) and four days later reported to US Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD) boot camp in San Diego, California.

After returning home from Marine Corps active duty, I registered at Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas for a couple of night classes. In about six weeks they found out about my lie, about graduating high school, and kicked me out. I cannot reveal my secret methods of storytelling, but I got back in college, with a better lie.

I went on to bust my butt (with lots of help from my wife) to manage, after, 7-1/2 years, to get a four-year, Bachelor of Science, degree in Mechanical Engineering. And by the way I never took a single class in PE and I took the Orientation Class as a graduating senior. You see I never thought I would actually graduate, (no money) so I did not waste my time or money on courses that would not help me in my current jobs.

While doing all this, and working full time, I also took a correspondence course in radio and television repair. And for a couple of years, I had a part time business repairing radios and televisions.

Upon graduating, I went to work, for a company, in the Petro-Chem industry, doing engineering, for about seven years. Then I started my own (with a partner) professional engineering consulting business Chemic Engineers and Constructors Inc.. Been signing my own paychecks ever since.

Most of my personal work was in control systems design and engineering with a lot of computer knowledge requirements. I wrote a couple of books on Petro-Chem engineering and wrote a software program (ECALC), (I did the actual code writing) for doing Petro-Chem engineering calculations. Sold it too.

Also, I have designed and written software, programming, basic artificial Intelligence programs in the following languages.

DOS, IBM’S Control language for the first personal computers

BASICA-A, IBM’S user language for the first personal computers

GWBASIC General use language for other personal computers

Microprocessor 6502, object and machine language (very difficult)

MODICON, TEXAS INSTRUMENTS, and GE programmable logic control (PLC) languages for systems control.

GRAPHICAL C, programing language for VEX Robots.

C++, programing language for VEX-V5 Robots

And, maybe, another one or two
