W e have to get out of here. Now! I yell at my friends, more like my brothers, as I start coughing from the thick smoke coming up the stairs.

Wait, we can’t leave without Headmaster Lyle, Ryan, the youngest and most kindhearted of us, says, looking down the hall toward the Headmaster’s room.

We don’t have time. We need to get out of here before the fire gets to the steps and cuts us off, I yell while chasing him down the hall.

A blast of fire comes at us as we reach the Headmaster’s door. I try to pull Ryan behind me, but it’s too late. He throws his hand over his face just as the fire sears up his arms. Pulling off my shirt, I wrap it around the burns as he starts crying. I know it must hurt, and I wish I could do more.

Come on, let’s get back to the others and get out of here, I say, pulling him behind me. We make our way quickly down the stairs to our other five brothers.

It’s unbearably hot in here. My eyes are watering and I can barely see, my throat burning from the heated air I’m sucking in. Knowing they are following, I still turn and look
