Wealth Beyond Hours - STEVE BRIAN
INTRODUCTION
In our second volume , Wealth Beyond Hours,
we go deeper into the essence of life's most valuable commodities in the enthralling world of Time and Money,
where the jingling coins and ticking clock dance together in a relentless waltz. Wealth Beyond Hours
is a masterfully written second volume that delves deeper into the dynamic interplay between wealth and time, if Time vs. Money
were the prologue to this fascinating story.
The emphasis of this volume in our series shifts to discovering time-saving techniques. Time is money, as we've all heard, but how can we use this effective formula to break free from the limitations of our daily existence? Here is where our voyage starts, as we set out on an expedition that will reveal the riches concealed in the effective use of time, our most limited resource.
As we delve deeper into Wealth Beyond Hours,
we'll learn how to defeat procrastination, the time-honored enemy of productivity. This, however, is not merely a manual; rather, it's a dialogue, an amicable discussion in which we exchange the knowledge and understanding amassed from the points where time and money converge, motivated by the experiences and discoveries of those who came before us.
Thus, my dear reader, when you turn the pages and participate in this open discussion, get ready to see how fleeting moments can become something far more precious—riches that last for hours. Here at Wealth Beyond Hours,
the quest for wealth and balance is as captivating as the ticking clock and as poignant as the jingling coins of life's treasure trove.
CHAPTER 1:
TIME-SAVING STRATEGIES
"A ll of your thoughts should be focused on your greatest life desire. According to Charles E. Popplestone, This concentration must be continuous, unceasing—every minute, every hour, every day, every week.
The one essential component needed for success is time. Time is necessary for all you wish to accomplish. Saving time that you would typically spend elsewhere is the only way you can obtain enough time to do the things that can truly change your life. All day long, you are surrounded by situations and people who squander your time and reduce your effectiveness. You can only break away from these time-thieves by exercising strict self-control.
The Six Biggest Time Wasters
Hundreds of studies and opinion polls have revealed six common workplace time wasters. The extent of your career success will primarily depend on how well you handle them.
1. Interruptions on the Phone
Interruptions caused by phones top the list. The sound of the phone ringing disturbs and diverts your attention from what you are doing.
You are frequently sidetracked and find it difficult to return to the task at hand after hanging up the phone.
2. Unexpected Guests
Visits from unexpected or drop-in guests might take a lot of time. These are folks who unexpectedly stop by you, either from outside or from within your organization. They interfere with your productivity, interrupt your flow of thinking, and reduce your efficiency. There are times when they will not stop talking about trivial topics, which prevents you from working.
3. Gatherings
Meetings take up at least 40% of your time, including scheduled and impromptu. Formal or informal, they can take place in the halls, between offices, or in groups for prearranged meetings or one-on-one conversations. A lot of them are pointless or just time-wasting.
4. Fighting Fires and Other Emergencies
Firefighting, emergencies, and the inescapable catastrophe are a significant time waster and consumer. Something completely unanticipated occurs right when you sit down to work on something important, sometimes diverting your attention from your primary objective for hours at a time.
5. Delays in action
Procrastination, the thief of time, is a tremendous waste of both life and time. Procrastination is a universal inclination, for several reasons that we will discuss in detail in Chapter Eight.
6. Mingling and casual conversation
It takes a great deal of time to socialize. Up to 75% of the time spent at work is reportedly spent communicating with coworkers.
Unfortunately, idle conversation unrelated to work takes up exactly half of this time. Completing tasks takes time away from socializing.
7. Error and Procrastination
Uncertainty consumes more time than most people think, particularly when dealing with people, tasks, paper, and email. You and others both lose time when you are indecisive.
With the exception of procrastination, you will discover multiple tried-and-true methods for handling each of these time-wasters in this chapter. We will go into great detail on this topic in the upcoming chapter since it is so vital.
A Brief Recap
Let's take a moment to go over the essentials of efficient time management that this book has already discussed.
1. Modify Your Thinking
We started out by discussing The Psychology of Time Management,
which calls on you to firmly resolve to master time management. Always keep oneself well-organized in your thoughts. Envision yourself as productive, successful, and efficient.
2. Well-defined Aims and Objectives
You need to have specific goals and objectives that align with your deepest beliefs and values in order to perform at your best. Your likelihood of effectively managing your time increases with the number of goals you create for yourself, particularly if they align with your values.
According to the Law of Forced Efficiency,
you will become more proficient at finishing the most crucial portions of the work the more you take on. You'll have to work efficiently merely to stay on top of your duties.
A lot of work usually always translates into increased efficiency; this law also states, There is never enough time for everything, but there is always enough time for the most important things.
3. Organize Your Work in Great Detail
For productive work, you need thorough action plans that are arranged according to priority and order. For every minute you spend before to starting to plan and organize, you will save ten minutes during implementation.
4. Prioritize Your Tasks Clearly
Prioritize your duties clearly and focus only on the most important ones. Use the 80/20 Rule in all areas. Keep the important and the urgent apart. Focus on making the most out of your time at all times.
5. Work Every Day That You Work
It is crucial that you establish positive work habits and learn to focus entirely on what is most important at any given moment. Excellent work habits are essential for achieving great success in life and allow you to generate far more than the ordinary individual.
6. Handle Multiple Tasks
Using all you have studied thus far, you must carefully consider and plan major jobs or complex tasks involving multiple employees. Consider things out aloud and make it a habit to arrange and think out every aspect before starting.
How You Use Your Time Now
WHAT ARE YOUR DAILY activities? Michael Fortino, a time management expert, estimates that you will spend seven years in the restroom on average. You will eat for six years. You'll be standing in line for five years. Your residence will need to be cleaned for four years. Three years will pass while you are in meetings. You are going to search for items for a year. It will take you eight months to sort through trash mail. Six months will pass while you wait at red lights. You will clean your teeth for 120 days. And now for the real kicker. Every day, you will talk to your spouse for four minutes and your children for thirty seconds.
Acquire and Maintain Focus
You will need to learn how to eliminate time wasters and save time in all aspects of your life if you want to positively alter some of these ratios. For example, you should constantly ask yourself the following questions in order to save time at work:
Why do I receive pay?
What is the purpose of my employment?
What is my current main purpose or aim?
What should I do, or should I be doing right now?
For what outcomes have I been hired?
Are my current actions helping me to achieve my most essential goals and objectives?
THE MOST CRUCIAL QUESTION to ask yourself is, Why am I on the payroll?
which you should ask yourself every step of the way from the moment you start working until you stop.
Is this the work I was paid to accomplish, or am I doing something else? The word No!
is the best time-saver of them all. Develop the practice of saying No!
To any time demands that don't help you achieve your most crucial objectives.
SEVEN STRATEGIES FOR HANDLING PHONE HANG-UPS
The following seven suggestions can assist you in overcoming the oppression of phone interruptions:
1. Employ It for Business Purposes
Make use of the phone as a tool for business. Go quickly on and off it. When working, avoid using your phone for socializing. Make as many calls as you can effectively.
You started using the phone as a social tool when you were a teenager. It served as a bridge between you and your pals who are of the other sex. You got used to talking aimlessly on the phone for extended periods of time. Even as an adult, you still connect idle chatting and mingling with the phone. It's become second nature.
BUT ONCE YOU START a job, you have to kick that habit and start thinking of the phone as a tool for professional communication. You have to force yourself to use the phone for work purposes between nine and five.
2. Get Your Phones Filtered
Obtain call screening. Before you respond, find out who it is and what they want. Overcome your innate interest that arises when someone you don't know calls. Prior to answering the call, find out why they are calling.
3. Hold Your Phone Calls
Whenever possible, ask to have your calls held. Allocate specific times during the day to avoid distractions. Refrain from being a slave to your ringing phone. When working on a significant project, turning off your phone is one of the best strategies you can employ. The person who is calling you will return the call if it is serious enough.
4. Provide Explicit Call-Back Times
Get callback times and provide them. Leave a message and the time you will be ready to take the call back when you call someone who is not present.
As soon as a call comes in and you are unable to answer it, make sure your secretary or receptionist is given a callback time. This is your chance to contact them so that
