I dedicate this book to my parents.

On August 13, 2023, my parents celebrated 60 years of Holy Matrimony: 63 years of marriage, strong and infallible, withstanding the wind, the rain, the storms, and the seasons. They have endured the true tests of time, thanks to an amazing God that I have witnessed them serve through the challenges of life. They made it through more happiness than sadness and more good health than sickness, unforeseen death, and unforeseen obstacles.

My parents were high school sweethearts. After 60 years of marriage, my mom still prepares three meals a day for my dad just as she did when the children lived at home. They still eat three times a day at practically the same time each day. They exercise together at the gym, and due to Covid walk the track together. My dad still opens and closes doors for my mom.

My mom loves to tell the story of how she and my dad met. If you ever could meet my mom, she will tell you too. She tells it each time as if it happened yesterday and as if this is the first time she has ever told the story, and the first time you have heard it.

They have been such an amazing example and inspiration to so many in the community, including my brothers and me and all our children. I hope their love will inspire you too! Their love story is a testimony to the fact that marriages can last happily ever after; however, it is not a fairy tale but a reality that is possible with God. The reality my parents have shown me is that marriage is not always easy however, through faith, patience, and communication, love can conquer all. Are they perfect? They are perfect for each other, and that is all that matters! Their story began several years ago in the autumn of 1953 when a seed was sown and cultivated in the hearts of two young people, Helen and Bill. That seed blossomed into a tree of love in the summer of 1960. These are just two sentences from their book of endless stories. I will leave the rest for them to share.

For now, Mom and Dad, I salute you, love you, and dedicate this book to you!

And now these three remain: faith, hope, and love. But the greatest of these is love.

    1 Corinthians 13:13

She’s the kind of soul that draws those who are searching, who are vulnerable, and who are looking for affirmation and connection. You’ll be better because of reading the work of her heart.

    Acknowledgements

I would like to start by thanking my precious family for their love and patience, especially while working on this project. To my incredible husband, Jonathan, the pillar who supports me unconditionally in all my endeavours. Thank you for believing in me. I’m grateful for our life together.

To my children, Jessica, Jonathan II, Jacob, and Jada, you are truly God’s gift to me. Each one of you are special to me in your own unique way—Jessica for your compassion, Jonathan for your enthusiasm, Jacob for your courage, and Jada for your creativity. Thank you for being my first audience, and most importantly, thank you for your love, honour, respect, encouragement, support, and prayers. I do not take any of these for granted.

To my dad, William B. Holmes, Sr., your powerful presence is so full of love, wisdom, and compassion. You have truly influenced me to reach for greater heights and to always stand firm for what is right even if it means standing alone. Keep standing tall and proud.

To my mom, Helen Vereen Holmes. By example, you showed me how to be the wife, mother, and devout Christian woman that I am today. To this day, I still live by your motto: While it is nice to be very important, it is more important to be very nice. Through your walk with the Trinity—the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit—the Trinity manifested in me.

To my brothers and their wives and families, Mark Sr. and Marella, William Jr. and Bernell, thank you for being there and for your fervent prayers. I treasure our strong and unique bond from childhood to adulthood.

To my late brother, Allen, we miss you so much! Psalm 34:18 states the lord is close to the broken hearted.

To the late Beverly Jean and Gail. My beloved sister cousins: I miss you so much!

To my dear uncles and aunts who are still going strong: Fred Vereen Jr., Harold Vereen (Joyce), Leola Ford, and Olivia Leggett (Oliver), thank you for your love and support throughout my life.
