My name is Sterns; I’m chief govenor in this place. I first met Jerry Cutler when he was incarcerated in my State Penitentiary in 2010. I had been the new warden at the prison for just a little over two years at that time and he made an immediate impression on me that I would never forget in a hurry. No sir.

He may have started off on the wrong foot with me ; without doubt he definitely pissed me off with his ‘bad boy’ attitude, but as time went by I learnt how to use him, manipulate him, and get him to do all sorts of dirty work for me. Half the time he didn’t even know he was being used, he was so stupid that he actually thought I liked the man. I tell you he was a dork with a capital ‘D’ but a very useful dork.

I was relatively new to the prison service, even though I’d been promoted to Chief Warden after a very damaging riot in this place, and Cutler taught me a lot about things that I had previously been totally naïve about. The gangs, the rituals, the revenge attacks, and the bullying. Ok, I had a vague idea, I’m not that green behind the ears, but I was not right into all that shit, and what he leaked out to me proved to be very useful in handling trouble makers and big shot inmates over the coming years.

Take the bullying for example. This could take the form of a simple beating in the shower block right the way through to blackmail by threats of violence, and targeting new young inmates for protection-sex. As I say, I knew this stuff happened but before Cutler came along I’d never had insider information. He was like a walking encyclopedia on prison crime.

And bikers too. He told me so much that I didn’t know. I had only known what I had seen on TV and in the movies or stuff I had been I had been programmed to believe from society. I thought all bikers were big hairy, beer swilling ass holes that had no other interest in their lives but to get laid and cause trouble. Well I was right. That’s what they were like, in prison anyway.

In this prison they were grouped into separate gangs, depending on where they originated from, and did nothing but try and use that group strength and power to force protection on other inmates especially the fresh faces and the weaker ones who couldn’t or daren’t fight back. They wanted money, cigarettes and sex; mainly sex. Cutler told me all their methods they used to enforce their protection rackets, the guy was invaluable and didn’t even suspect for a second that I was draining information out of him. Like I say, he should have had the word ‘dork’ tattooed across his forehead.

One day he was in my office and getting a little over friendly, taking my false friendship a little too far. I had to put him in his place, without him realizing. I didn’t want to break his unfounded trust though otherwise I would have lost him.

Warden, He had said, We get along pretty damned good, right? Why don’t you call me Crusher? All my buddies do...I don’t mind.
