Multiple Sclerosis Demystified - Dr. Ankita Kashyap

    Chapter 1: Understanding Multiple Sclerosis

    What Is Multiple Sclerosis?

    Types of Multiple Sclerosis

An unpredictable neurological illness that affects the central nervous system is multiple sclerosis. The protective covering of the nerve fibres in the brain and spinal cord are destroyed, which causes issues with communication between the brain and the rest of the body. Numerous symptoms, including weariness, balance issues, muscle weakness, numbness, and even cognitive impairment, might be brought on by this disintegration.

Investigating the various forms of multiple sclerosis is essential for a complete understanding of the disease. Relapsing-remitting MS is the most prevalent kind of the disease (RRMS). People who have been diagnosed with MS typically fall into this category to an extent of about 85%. Patients with RRMS go through relapses or attacks, where new symptoms may arise or pre-existing ones may get worse. Following these relapses, there are times of remission during which the symptoms get better or go away entirely. Individuals can experience relapses and remissions for a variety of lengths of time.

Because relapses and remissions are unpredictable, RRMS differs from other kinds of MS. Before experiencing a sudden and unanticipated recurrence, patients may go months or even years without exhibiting any symptoms. This emotional rollercoaster of symptoms can have a profound effect on a person's quality of life. Effective management of RRMS depends on regular monitoring and early action.

Primary Progressive MS is a different variety of MS (PPMS). In contrast to RRMS, PPMS is characterised by a constant and progressive increase of symptoms without any remission intervals. Around 40 or 50 years old is the average age at which this type of MS first manifests. Approximately 10-15% of MS patients have PPMS, which is less prevalent than RRMS.

The symptoms of PPMS often impede movement and function and are more incapacitating. Common PPMS symptoms include stiffness, muscle weakness, and difficulty walking. People with PPMS need specific care and assistance to preserve their quality of life and independence because there are no remissions or relapses. Patients with PPMS benefit greatly from physical therapy, assistive technology, and symptom management strategies to help them adapt to and manage everyday activities.

The kind of MS known as secondary progressive MS (SPMS) develops after a period of relapsing-remitting MS. Approximately 65 percent of patients with RRMS go on to develop SPMS. During this stage, the illness steadily worsens and there are fewer or no remissions. Over time, symptoms could get worse and cause more disability.

It can be difficult to manage SPMS since it necessitates a change in treatment approaches from treating relapses to addressing the disease's long-term progression. A multidisciplinary approach is frequently used in this, with medical specialists offering advice on symptom management, physical therapy, and psychological
