The Guardian's Oath:
Legacy of Brentwood's Sentinel
Chapter 1:
Recurring Nightmares and Unusual News
Michael awoke with a start, his heart pounding in his chest like a trapped bird against cage bars. The room around him lay shrouded in the hazy dimness of pre-dawn, the only sound being the labored breaths escaping his lips. The dream. That accursed dream had returned. Yet again, he had been standing at the edge of a chasm, with shadowy figures whispering cryptic chants, their voices culminating in a haunting refrain: Forty-seven.
He shook his head in a feeble attempt to dispel the lingering dread. With trembling fingers, he wiped the sweat from his brow and ran them through his unkempt hair. The clock by his bedside blinked 4:47 a.m. in sinister synchronicity. A groan escaped him as he pushed back the sheets, their coolness contrasting starkly with his feverish skin.
The floorboards felt icy against his feet as he shuffled toward the bathroom, seeking solace in the routine of morning ablutions. The familiar cool splash of water felt therapeutic against his skin, momentarily numbing the terror that had gripped him moments ago.
As he stared at his reflection in the misted mirror, the face that stared back bore traces of strain. Dark circles underlined his eyes, a testament to countless restless nights. A soft whisper of doubt nudged at the back of his mind. What if this isn't just a dream? What if there's a message hidden within it?
Shaking off the unsettling thought, he headed to the kitchen. Breakfast might offer a brief reprieve from the swirling storm of thoughts. Pouring a bowl of cereal and adding a splash of milk, he sank into his favorite armchair, picking up the remote to surf through the morning news.
The flickering screen displayed mundane stories until a familiar face appeared, instantly seizing Michael's attention. Bill Jackson, the portly grocer everyone affectionately referred to as Curious Bill, was animatedly speaking to a news reporter. His usually jovial face was etched with a mixture of awe and terror.
Michael's hand froze halfway to his mouth, a spoonful of cereal hovering in the air as Bill narrated the previous night's events. Bill's voice, tinged with genuine fear, pierced through the early morning silence of Michael's living room. The entire room... it went mad. Just utter chaos. The man didn’t even touch anything. He'd just point or gesture, and things would fly off shelves or lights would flicker.
A shiver ran down Michael's spine. This was eerily reminiscent of the mayhem from his nightmares.
Bill continued, And then... then he muttered it.
The grocer paused, licking his lips nervously, clearly uncomfortable with the memory.
The reporter, sensing the suspense, leaned in with wide-eyed anticipation. What did he say, Bill?
Taking a deep breath, Bill's voice dropped to an almost inaudible whisper. He kept repeating the number... forty-seven.
The spoon clattered against the bowl, milk splashing onto the table. Michael's gaze was transfixed on the screen, every cell in his body screaming in alarm. The connection was undeniable. His recurring dream and this strange incident were
