Chapter 1:
The Meeting Below
There was a peculiar beauty to darkness, or so thought Luga as she stood concealed in the muted shadows of the basement beneath the Rimi apartment complex. Each sliver of light that managed to penetrate the dusky atmosphere seemed to quiver, embodying the palpable tension that filled the air. The weight of a hundred stolen breaths, of suppressed emotions and festering ambitions, clung to the dampened walls, making the space feel even more confined.
Luga's eyes, accustomed to such dimness, drifted across the room, mapping each face in attendance. These were the dangerous ones, the criminals. Not the kind that stole bread or picked pockets, but those whose choices would decide the fate of their world. The amalgamation of such personalities in one space was a spectacle in itself.
One would imagine that criminals, especially those of this caliber, would be a boisterous lot. Yet, the room was wrapped in an almost reverent silence, occasionally broken by the murmured exchanges between old associates or the soft clinking of coins, as bets were made about the outcome of the evening.
Leaning against the rugged brick wall was Barnilo, the poison merchant, dressed in his characteristic emerald robes, his eyes forever darting suspiciously. Close to the entrance stood Zila, renowned for her ability to gather secrets like most would gather flowers. Her tall, willowy frame was draped in deep blues, her raven hair cascading down her back. She whispered to Jero, the smuggler king, who responded with a toothy grin, his single gold tooth catching a glimmer of the scarce light.
In the center of the room, elevated on a makeshift wooden platform, was a vacant chair. It was a simple thing, unadorned and seemingly out of place amongst such a crowd, but it represented power – the seat of the interim leader, Respo, now ominously empty.
Respo’s death had sent tremors not just through the underworld, but had also made ripples in the overworld – the Surfer realm. The Surfers, the upper echelon of their society, had always looked down upon the Rimi, but they couldn't deny the power vacuum Respo's death had created. With Esavi, the cunning and ever-elusive founder, remaining a shadowy figure of the past, the balance of power had tilted dangerously.
Just as Luga’s thoughts began to spiral deeper into the intrigue, a dry chuckle echoed through the basement. It was Rax,
