Roji Reverie:
Legacy in the Shadows
Chapter 1:
Unearthly Encounters
The night air was cool and crisp, speckled with the silver light of a million distant stars. Melissa had always been a night owl, finding solace in the stillness of midnight. But tonight, the stillness was different. She felt a subtle shift, as if the universe itself was leaning in to whisper a secret.
Her home, situated on the outskirts of the Roji city, bordered the Great Forest—a place of mystery and untold stories. But this wasn't a night for old tales. This was the start of a new legend—one that centered on her.
She clutched her abdomen, feeling the soft thud-thud of the baby's heartbeat. It was strong, faster than any Roji child she’d ever known. But it wasn’t the heartbeat that was alarming—it was the songs. The baby was humming, a tune so complex, it sounded ancient. How was that possible? Roji infants developed their singing ability weeks after birth, not before.
A soft knock interrupted her thoughts. It was Zizu, looking even paler under the moonlight.
Mel?
he whispered, his voice tinged with the kind of dread you'd hear in someone recounting a ghost story. Did you... did you hear that?
She nodded. The song? Yes.
It's not just any song,
he said. I’ve heard it before.
She gazed into his eyes, searching for the answer. Zizu rarely spoke of his past. He’d been a wanderer, a poet, a dreamer, flitting from one town to the next, carrying tales from lands far and wide.
It’s the song of the Ancients,
he continued, a shiver in his voice. A song said to herald great change... or great tragedy.
Melissa's heart raced. What did this mean for their unborn child? Was this a blessing or a curse?
Why would our child sing it?
she questioned, the weight of her concerns evident in her voice.
Zizu ran a hand through his dark hair, clearly agitated. I don’t know. But there’s more I haven’t told you.
She raised an eyebrow. Like?
Like the fact that the Ancients weren't just myths or bedtime stories. They were real, Mel. And they were powerful.
She felt a chill run down her spine. The old stories had spoken of beings with abilities beyond comprehension, beings who once roamed the Roji lands. But those were just tales, weren't they?
As if reading her thoughts, Zizu added, I’ve met one.
She gasped. You what?
Years ago,
he began, his face paling as he recalled the memory, before I met you, I stumbled upon a hidden cave in the Far Mountains. Inside, there was an old being, neither Roji nor human. He claimed to be one of the last Ancients.
The wind picked up outside, sending a gust of dry leaves fluttering against the window. The universe seemed to be holding its breath, waiting for the next revelation.
What did he tell you?
Melissa pressed.
He told me of a prophecy,
Zizu hesitated, gathering his thoughts, A child, born of Roji blood, would sing the ancient song before birth. This child would either be the salvation or the downfall of us all.
Melissa's eyes widened in horror. The room seemed to close in on her, the weight of the prophecy pressing down. So, our child...?
Zizu nodded. Seems to be the one.
