Chapter 1

Durand leans back in his office chair, the phone pressed to his ear as he waits for the call to go through to his West Coast assistant, a Beverly Hills plastic surgeon. Richardo. Yes, yes doing quite well. He shakes his head, bored with the pleasantries they are exchanging. Yes, your contributions have been invaluable in advancing my work. Durand stares at his desk, at the series of eight-by-ten-inch close-up photos taken of Chris Ravello during the LA investigation. His left hand slowly uncovers one photo after the next as a sick smile emerges.

I have two more jobs for you, so listen carefully. My instructions need to be followed to the letter.…

Tony shoves Michelle Ravello across the tiny makeshift room, watching her stumble before tripping on the cot and slamming into the wall. Have a nice fucking night, toots.

She spins around and charges the door, reaching it as it slams shut in her face and the lock is engaged. She tries looking through the peephole but realizes this one looks into the room, not out.

Michelle surveys her surroundings. A small cot. A sink, toilet, and a small table. A glorified prison cell minus the steel bars. She smiles as she spots her handbag and gym bag lying in the corner.

They stopped her from taking the chemicals and drugs earlier, but she has plenty of other tricks up her sleeve.

She grabs the two bags and sits on the cot, using her body to shield what she’s doing from the peephole. Grabbing one of the running shoes, she peels out its sole, lifts out her smartphone, and powers it on. The partially eaten fruit icon appears. Punching in her passcode she looks at the phone and frowns. Barely any battery life left and no way to charge it. She quickly navigates through her recent calls, finds several from Chris, and hits callback, hoping she can say everything she needs to before the phone
