Author

William Rubin

William Rubin is a practicing physician who enjoys weaving tales of medical/scientific intrigue. Writing for him is equal parts catharsis, creativity, and escape from the rigors of a busy medical practice and the joys and challenges of raising a family. The works of James Patterson, Robin Cook, Michael Palmer, and Patricia Cornwell inspired Dr. Rubin to create the Christopher Ravello Series. Challenges and tragedies in Dr. Rubin’s life, particularly the untimely death of his mother, provided some of the underlying drama, conflict, and turmoil for the series’ lead character. When he isn't busy practicing medicine or crafting his next medical thriller, Dr. Rubin enjoys time with his family and friends, running, playing piano, and travel. He values your thoughts, insights, and feelings on this book so please leave a review on your favorite website(s)

    Chapter 1

Michelle lifts her head out of her hands. Police? Her salty tears dry as fierce determination fills her face. Rick and she stand tall, sizing each other up, poised for what is to come.

Tony, frozen in place, looks at the monitor dumbfounded. What now?

The answer comes quickly as his cell phone rings.

    Hello?

Durand’s voice snarls at him. Grab the girl and the bag and put the plan in effect. I’ll catch up with you later.

Tony stares at his phone a moment, still in shock as Michelle charges forward. Her right foot hurtles through the air on a collision course with the soft cartilage of Rick’s windpipe.

    §

Michelle’s clone, controlled by the nanometer sized devices that course through her, acts, thinks, and feels like the real Michelle. She stares at the TV monitors, her mouth agape as she tries to process what is happening. The call from Durand comes in. Everyone get out here on the double and kill the intruders, now! Guards grab guns off the rack behind Michelle and spring past her on each side, the last one locking the door from the outside as he exits.

The scene unfolds on the monitors before her. The police and FBI have the place surrounded. They’ll be inside in no time, she hopes.

Durand! You’re surrounded, give it up! King’s amplified voice booms through the ground floor rooms.

    §

Rick throws his hands up, absorbing the brunt of Michelle’s kick as she topples him backward, her bound hands slamming his head back onto the floor as she lands on top of him. She moves quickly, interlacing her fingers and swinging her hands above her head. A crunching sound rings out from Rick’s nose as Michelle’s fists crash into his face. Blood spurts across it. Rick throws his hands and arms into the posture of a battered fighter as Michelle’s hands slam into him again and again.

Tony’s eyes dart toward the bag across the room—too far away. Reaching for his gun, he charges toward her, taking aim as he’s almost on top of her.

    §

We’re not coming out without a fight, RJ, yells Chris as he peels off two shots. The bullets ricochet off the police cars in front of King.

"What the—? Have you gone loco, Ravello?
