    Love and Heartbreak:

    The beginning of the pain

    ––––––––

In this first chapter, we will explore the complexities of love and how intimate relationships become a fundamental part of our lives. We will examine the happiness that love can bring, but also the vulnerability we experience when love fades. We will introduce key concepts such as emotional dependency and how breakups can profoundly affect our mental and emotional health.

Throughout life, love stands as a shining beacon that guides our emotions and defines our relationships. But this same love, which can lift us to the heights of happiness, also exposes us to the depths of despair when it fades. Below, we will explore the roots of love and heartbreak, distilling the essence of these complex emotions that shape our most intimate experiences.

    ––––––––

    What is love?

From a psychological point of view, love still has very diffuse limits. When a person sees the object of her love, his heartbeat speeds up, his pulse increases, and his behavior changes. Love can have both a destructive and inspiring effect on a person.

Love arises by itself and is not subject to reason. Some psychologists maintain that love is a form of human socialization, and a trick of nature to make both sexes mate. Others call it the result of the production of sex hormones.

There is no consensus on the definition of love. Freud saw it as the energy of primary impulses. He called it attraction caused by the activity of the libido. The philosopher Jacques Lacan expressed the theory that love is accompanied by scarcity. It causes in a person the need to possess another. Karen Horney, in turn, calls love a manifestation of neurosis. She considers expressed passion to be a symptom of sexual dissatisfaction. The humanist Maslow considered love as one of the needs, which is also a driving motivation. He maintained that man equally needs stability, security, self-respect, and love. He divided love into deficit and existential. The first is a means to satisfy one's needs, and the existential one is characterized by care and dedication.

The concept of love in psychology has several contradictory interpretations. Experts say that true love is similar to love for a child. It is characterized by total dedication and the ability to empathize. However, the love of a couple is conditional, that is, if a single norm that is considered important (such as fidelity) is violated, the love collapses, but the love for a child is unconditional, and it does not matter what the child does, the father (or rather the mother) will love him unconditionally.

There are three main definitions of love:

    • Love is a state of infatuation, accompanied by obsession with a person. A person in love distances himself from reality, loses vigilance and his attention weakens.

    • Love is the habit of constantly interacting with a person. It can be fueled by pleasurable emotions and a sense of satisfaction.

    • Love is dependence on the object of your desire. It has been compared to a drug addiction. This definition is based on the release of happiness hormones in a person in love. Love is a feeling that escapes the control of the brain. It cannot be analyzed or evaluated.

    ––––––––

Love, in its various forms, is presented as a powerful agent of human connection. From platonic love to romantic love, from filial love to self-love, each variant has its own complexity and depth. Love becomes an integral part of our identity and our romantic relationships often become a mirror of our deepest longings and fears.

Love is very often confused with sympathy and sexual attraction, however, it has several distinctive characteristics. In psychology, the following signs of love are distinguished:

    • Indifference towards other people. Even if signs of attention from other objects are observed, the person in love remains indifferent to them.

    • The need to develop relationships. If a person wants something more than what is available at the moment, we can talk about love.

    • Without internal doubts. A person in love gains confidence that he has made the right decision in favor of her partner.

    • There is motivation to improve. A person in love strives to show the best side of himself.

    • If there is true love between two people, they enjoy being together even in absolute silence.

    • A person in love cannot clearly answer what attracted him to her partner. She loves not for something, but in spite of everything.

    • There is a desire to take her partner's side in any controversial situation. Love is accompanied by the ability to forgive.

    ––––––––

    The first love

First love is considered one of the most vivid emotions. There is a lot of talk about her in romantic films and literary works. For a person, first love is a serious test, the result of which determines the final formation of the personality.

Some psychologists say that first love is characteristic of adolescence, while other experts sometimes call adolescence the period of falling in love.
