    Moon Hunters - Catty Diva

    Prologue

He was born on Earth 2 to a young girl who had turned to the oldest trade in order to survive. Survival here wasn’t guaranteed no matter what you did, and she died in childbirth because she didn’t have enough money for a doctor and neither did her mother who was the only one there helping her. His grandmother had to bury her only daughter and had no interest in keeping him.

She sold him to an older couple who had failed to find a child of their own any other way. They loved him, he could remember that much, but they had waited too long to adopt, and his adopted father died when he was five. His mother followed soon after and his natural grandmother appeared and took him, claiming him since she was his only blood relative. She also stole and sold everything she could grab before the other distant relatives descended on the estate and did the same.

Cash was five years old and didn’t understand why his grandmother called him Cash, at least not until she sold him. It was to a lab which ended up being the reason he could claim he was more than human, much more. Now everyone called him Cash and eventually he forgot his real name. When he was fifteen, the lab was raided, and he escaped because many of the experiments ended up destroyed. Most of those didn’t even resemble a human and had they continued their work on him, he wouldn’t have either.

He was eighteen, when he finally had enough money saved to buy his first old spaceship and begin his first business. Finally, he could start on his dream.

What did you do? The old voice demanded.

She’d been listening intently. His grandmother had summoned him because she was on her deathbed and didn’t want to die alone. Now in the zenith of her life she ached for those family connections she had rejected previously. Marilou had wanted his story and he’d not left her part of it out.

I bought and sold items, took on passengers, and moved cargo. It was lucrative, but dangerous and soon I had international agencies searching for me all the time. There was no way to survive when I was hunted like that. I sold my spaceship and upgraded to a new one. A year later I found out that the guy who had bought it had been killed in a battle with one of those agencies searching for me. They declared that hundreds of cases had been closed with a single death and I was free to move on without any fear of being hunted. Cash explained.

Not the nicest thing you ever did, but brilliant if you hold no regrets.
