Chapter 1: What is Crohn’s Disease?
Crohn’s disease is a chronic condition that causes inflammation and irritation in your digestive tract¹. It is a type of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and can affect any part of the gastrointestinal tract, from your mouth to your anus²¹. However, it most commonly affects the small intestine and the beginning of the large intestine¹.
The inflammation caused by Crohn’s disease often spreads into the deeper layers of the bowel, which can lead to life-threatening complications². The symptoms of Crohn’s disease can range from mild to severe and may develop gradually or come on suddenly, without warning². You may also have periods of time when you have no signs or symptoms (remission) and periods when symptoms flare up².
The main symptoms of Crohn’s disease include:
Diarrhea: This happens when the intestines cannot absorb all the nutrients or fluid produced during the digestive process, causing stools to be loose and watery³.
Abdominal pain and cramping: This often occurs in the lower right area of your abdomen but can happen anywhere along the digestive tract.It can range from mild to severe, and may be constant or may come and go³.
Blood in stool: Chronic, constant inflammation from Crohn’s disease can lead to ulcers, fistulas, and fissures throughout the digestive tract.These can cause bleeding to
