Alexandra Quinlan sued the State of Virginia for defamation in September 2013, alleging that the McIntosh Police Department and the Alleghany County District Attorney’s Office mishandled the investigation into her family’s murder and ruined her life. On September 26, her attorney, Garrett Lancaster, called Donna Koppel, a police officer and also his wife, as a witness. On the night of the killings, January 15, 2013, Donna was the first officer to arrive at the Quinlan residence.
