It was a last-minute decision to let five-year-old Nathan O’Brien have a sleepover round his grandparents in June 2014

Alvin Liknes, 66, and wife Kathy Liknes, 53, lived in the south west neighbourhood of Calgary, Alberta.

They were planning on moving three hours away and were going to spend the winter months in Mexico.

On 29 June 2014, they held a sale on their property to get rid of some household items.

Their daughter Jennifer O’Brien had asked her son Nathan, five, whether he wanted to go to the zoo – or visit his grandparents.

He chose his grandparents.
